Romance in stories, and anime especially, often sparks strong opinions. Whether a show doesn’t develop a relationship enough, or fans disagree with which characters end up together, it’s a tricky element that can greatly impact how an anime is remembered – for better or worse.
Anime romance can be hit or miss with viewers, but many couples are genuinely enjoyable to watch. Some pairings are particularly memorable and are widely considered among the most iconic in anime history.
10) Makoto Yuki And Aigis (Persona 3: The Movie)

Makoto Yuki and Aigis are key characters in the Persona 3 The Movie series. Aigis is a special weapon designed to fight Shadows, and she becomes a member of the group SEES in the second film. She quickly develops a strong, almost instinctual need to protect Makoto and remain constantly by his side, even though they haven’t known each other long.
Although Makoto and Aigis were already seen as a main couple in Persona 3, the movies made their connection crystal clear. They featured many more scenes of the two bonding and helping each other, truly highlighting their relationship. Many fans consider Makoto and Aigis to have the strongest romance in the entire Persona series, and the films captured this beautifully.
9) Ichigo Kurosaki And Orihime Inoue (Bleach)

Ichigo Kurosaki and Orihime Inoue are the central couple in the anime Bleach. Initially, Orihime’s feelings for Ichigo weren’t reciprocated, but as they both gain spiritual abilities and face numerous battles together, they begin to develop mutual feelings, learning to support each other as equals.
Although Bleach focuses mainly on action, the connection between Ichigo and Orihime is clear from the start, making their eventual marriage at the end of the series feel truly rewarding. Romance is often a weak point in action-packed anime like Bleach, but the show actually handles it surprisingly well.
8) Kagome Higurashi And Inuyasha (Inuyasha)

Kagome Higurashi and Inuyasha are the central couple in the anime series Inuyasha. They’re thrown together on a journey through historical Japan to collect the shattered pieces of the Shikon Jewel. Though their relationship starts with a lot of arguing and jealousy, it eventually blossoms into something real and meaningful, even if they have trouble expressing their feelings.
Rumiko Takahashi is a celebrated manga artist known for her compelling romantic stories, and Inuyasha beautifully showcases this talent. The connection between Kagome and Inuyasha is particularly strong, and the story realistically portrays their journey to becoming a couple. While it took time for them to get together, watching their relationship develop was consistently engaging.
7) The Rentaro Family (The 100 Girlfriends Who Really, Really, Really, Really, Really Love You)

The anime The 100 Girlfriends Who Really, Really, Really, Really, Really Love You from Bibury Animation Studios centers on Rentaro Aijo, a high school student who learns he’s destined to have 100 soulmates and needs to love them all equally. This results in Rentaro attracting a growing group of girls, known together as the Rentaro Family.
Even though harem anime can be divisive, 100 Girlfriends stands out because of its likable main character and the genuine friendships developed between him and the many girls. This makes the romance feel believable – a rare feat for the genre – and it’s easily the best harem anime to watch. Surprisingly, the show actually improves as more girlfriends are introduced.
6) Nanoha Takamachi And Fate Testarossa (Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha)

Nanoha Takamachi and Fate Testarossa are central characters in the Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha series. Initially, they start as competitors, but Nanoha quickly befriends Fate. Their bond deepens over time, and they eventually become close enough to live together and raise a child.
Although it’s never been officially stated, the connection between Nanoha and Fate clearly feels romantic. Their relationship is also remarkably deep and complex, having developed over many years since childhood. A new Nanoha anime is scheduled to come out in 2026, and fans hope it will further explore and strengthen their bond.
5) Edward Elric And Winry Rockbell (Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood)

Edward Elric and Winry Rockbell are the central couple in the anime Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood. They share a deep bond: Winry is one of the few people Edward trusts with his painful history involving human transmutation and his quest for the Philosopher’s Stone, and Edward, in return, is Winry’s biggest support as she copes with her own personal losses.
The relationship between Winry and Edward is a highlight of Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood. The series naturally weaves their connection into the story, and it’s heartwarming to watch them support and motivate each other throughout. While their relationship received less focus in the 2003 anime, Brotherhood clearly demonstrates why so many fans adore it.
4) Yuki Itose And Itsuomi Nagi (A Sign Of Affection)

Yuki Itose and Itsuomi are the central figures in Ajiado’s manga, A Sign of Affection. Yuki, who was born with hearing loss, has always managed to live a fulfilling, though somewhat uneventful, life. That changes when she meets Itsuomi, who speaks many languages, and she experiences a new sense of excitement – and quickly falls in love with him.
Yuki and Itsuomi become a couple quickly, and their relationship is consistently sweet and enjoyable to watch, even when they face challenges. It’s a genuinely heartwarming dynamic, and it’s disappointing that the story doesn’t go on longer.
3) Kaguya Shinomiya And Miyuki Shirogane (Kaguya-sama: Love Is War)

Kaguya Shinomiya and Miyuki Shirogane are the stars of the anime Kaguya-sama: Love is War. They both secretly like each other, but are too proud and worried about rejection to admit it. This leads to a funny and clever game where they try to trick the other into confessing their feelings first.
At first, Kaguya and Miyuki’s relationship is all fun and games, but it quickly becomes apparent that they’re both dealing with deeper, relatable problems. Watching them support each other and grow is incredibly charming. Many consider Kaguya-sama to be one of the best romance anime of recent years, and it’s easy to understand why.
2) Domon Kasshu And Rain Mikamura (Mobile Fighter G Gundam)

Domon Kasshu and Rain Mikamura are the central couple in Sunrise’s Mobile Fighter G Gundam. Rain isn’t just Domon’s engineer during the Gundam Fight; she’s also his oldest friend and a constant support, helping him cope with his difficult past, even when he doesn’t fully grasp her reasons.
Despite its silly concept, Mobile Fighter G Gundam has a surprisingly genuine emotional core, especially in the relationship between Domon and Rain. Their romance strikes a wonderful balance between dramatic moments and heartfelt connection, culminating in a truly moving finale. While romance isn’t uncommon in Gundam series, Domon and Rain’s story is arguably the most compelling and well-developed of them all.
1) Simon The Digger And Nia Teppelin

In Studio Trigger’s Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, Simon and Nia form the central couple. They first connected when Simon was struggling with grief after Kamina’s death. As they supported each other through difficult times, their relationship blossomed, with each person helping the other grow and understand the world – and themselves – better.
Simon and Nia’s relationship is successful because it feels genuine and we see them develop throughout the story, making their emotional scenes particularly impactful. Though their relationship has a sad ending, they remain a strong contender for the best anime couple of all time.
