Batman is a hugely popular and enduring character in pop culture, appearing in countless films and TV shows over the decades. Since his 1939 debut in comic books, the Dark Knight has constantly changed and adapted, staying relevant to audiences. He’s one of the most famous heroes ever created, and his stories were key in developing the modern superhero movie. Each Batman film has added something new to his legend, as many different writers and directors have put their own spin on the character.
Each actor who has played Batman in live-action films has brought their own unique take to the character, but some performances are definitely more popular and well-received than others. While some casting choices now seem questionable, others have been surprisingly successful, with actors exceeding expectations in the role. Ultimately, each Batman actor has contributed something different, but a few stand out as truly exceptional.
12) Lewis Wilson

Lewis Wilson was the first actor to portray Batman in a live-action film, appearing in a 15-part serial in 1943. Given that the character was still very new at the time, it’s not surprising that this version of Batman doesn’t seem as impressive today. While Wilson’s portrayal looks more like a low-budget costume than the iconic Dark Knight, his place in history as the first live-action Batman is why he’s remembered.
11) George Clooney

Many fans and even George Clooney himself agree that his portrayal of Batman was a misstep. His version, which appeared in the 1997 film Batman & Robin and briefly in 2023’s The Flash, was criticized for being overly flashy and for the unusual design choice of including nipples on the suit. Clooney readily acknowledges the performance wasn’t his best, and it’s often considered one of the least successful interpretations of the classic DC character.
10) Iain Glen

Iain Glen also portrayed Batman in live-action, appearing as Bruce Wayne in the TV series Titans. The show, known for its mature themes, centered on the adventures of the Titans team, not Batman himself. Glen played an older Bruce Wayne who acted as a guide and mentor to the younger heroes. While Glen’s take on the character was well-executed, it didn’t quite capture what audiences expect from a Batman portrayal.
9) David Mazouz

The TV series Gotham explored the early stories of many characters from the Batman universe, though Batman himself was a secondary figure for most of the show. While the series had its share of debated choices, especially regarding its final portrayal of the hero, it did eventually show David Mazouz, who played young Bruce Wayne, become Batman in the finale. Though his Batman costume was visually appealing, many viewers felt the show spent too long building up to his transformation, and ultimately didn’t deliver a satisfying conclusion for the character.
8) Robert Lowery

Robert Lowery, the second actor to portray Batman in a live-action film, is generally considered a significant improvement over his predecessor. In the 1949 serial Batman & Robin, Lowery presented a Batman that has aged better over time. Though his version lacks many of the features we associate with modern Batman, Lowery was physically well-suited for the role, and his charming and clever performance as Bruce Wayne showed how much depth the character could have on screen.
7) Kevin Conroy

While Kevin Conroy’s short on-screen appearance as Batman might not seem like a big deal, the story behind it is what makes it special. As the voice of Batman for decades, notably in Batman: The Animated Series, his portrayal of an older Bruce Wayne was a tribute to his impact on the character. Even though the Crisis on Infinite Earths storyline could have gone any direction, fans were always going to connect with Conroy’s Batman because of his long history with the role.
6) Adam West

Adam West’s portrayal of Batman, while not physically imposing, is still incredibly memorable. Though today’s viewers might find it cheesy and over-the-top, he was the first live-action Batman for many people and truly shaped how a generation understood the character. Even though his Batman is somewhat simple, it kept audiences entertained and played a significant role in making Batman the pop culture phenomenon he is today.
5) Val Kilmer

Although Val Kilmer only played Batman in one film, his portrayal sparked a lot of debate. He was frequently compared to the previous actor, and his 1995 performance in Batman Forever often doesn’t receive the recognition it deserves. While the movie has flaws, Kilmer’s Batman wasn’t a bad performance at all; he looked the part, and the character was written with complexity, even if the film’s plot didn’t fully explore that depth.
4) Robert Pattinson

Many people were surprised when Robert Pattinson was first cast as Batman, but he quickly won fans over. Matt Reeves’ film offered a dark and fresh take on the character and Gotham City, and Pattinson brought a unique blend of relaxed power and menace to the role. While the movie didn’t delve deeply into Bruce Wayne’s personal life, Pattinson’s performance as Batman exceeded almost everyone’s expectations.
3) Ben Affleck

Ben Affleck’s Batman started as a controversial portrayal, but it eventually won over fans, who were genuinely sad to see him leave the role. His version of the character was known for being tough and violent, and while he broke Batman’s usual rule against killing, he offered a fresh and compelling take on the iconic hero. Though his performance was initially criticized, it’s now considered one of the most intriguing live-action Batmans in DC film history.
2) Michael Keaton

Michael Keaton is often considered the best live-action Batman by many fans. He first played the character in Tim Burton’s 1989 film Batman and continued in Batman Returns (1992), successfully balancing a strange, unusual side with the character’s inherent darkness. His Batman suit is highly praised, and a recent cameo in the 2023 film The Flash reminded audiences why they love Keaton’s portrayal so much.
1) Christian Bale

Christian Bale’s Batman is remembered either for his intense dedication to the role or for being a perfect realization of Christopher Nolan’s creative vision. His performance in Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy is widely considered one of the greatest live-action superhero portrayals ever, successfully blending a relatable human side with the character’s comic book roots. The Dark Knight films remain incredibly popular, and Bale’s Batman is a major reason why.
