As a movie buff, let me tell you, Netflix is overflowing with choices! They’re constantly adding and removing titles – a mix of their own originals and films from other studios. Honestly, it can be tough to keep up with what’s available. But right now, there’s a really solid selection, especially if you’re into fantasy or sci-fi. I’ve been finding some truly mind-bending adventures, though be warned – some of these plots are pretty complex and require you to really pay attention!
Looking for thought-provoking movies on Netflix? Here’s a list of excellent films, ranging from Netflix originals to beloved science fiction classics.
7) Spaceman

Okay, let me tell you about Spaceman on Netflix. It stars Adam Sandler, and it’s… well, it’s a trip. The movie’s based on a novel, and it follows a Czech astronaut who’s sent out near Jupiter to check out this weird cloud. It’s a really isolating story because he left his pregnant wife back on Earth, and while he’s out there, they start to lose contact. It’s a pretty mind-bending and emotional watch, honestly.
Things take a strange turn when Jakub encounters a spider-like alien who starts talking to him. The movie leaves you wondering if this encounter is real, or if Jakub is simply cracking under the pressure of being alone in space. The film largely features Sandler interacting with this CGI alien, voiced by Paul Dano, and it’s a story about dealing with regret and feeling isolated.
6) Mute

When it was released, Mute didn’t get very good reviews, which is a shame considering director Duncan Jones (Moon, Source Code) had some interesting concepts for this sci-fi film. The story follows Leo, played by Alexander Skarsgård, a silent bartender searching for his missing girlfriend. The film is a mystery set in a dark, futuristic underworld, and centers around a criminal network involving illegal surgeries and child abuse, and what connection it has to Leo’s lost love.
I really loved what Duncan Jones was going for with this film – he wanted that classic, moody vibe of Blade Runner, setting the story in a dark, gritty, futuristic world. What’s cool is that it’s kind of a spiritual sequel to his earlier movie, Moon, which was amazing! Moon starred Sam Rockwell as this lone guy on a moon base who discovers he’s not as alone as he thought, and it was just brilliant sci-fi. While Mute didn’t quite live up to Moon, I honestly think it’s a good film that deserves more love than it gets.
5) Upgrade

Leigh Whannell, known for writing the script for Saw, wrote and directed the 2018 sci-fi thriller Upgrade, which is currently streaming on Netflix. Set in 2046, the film follows an auto mechanic whose life is turned upside down when a crash leaves his wife dead and him paralyzed. He gets a chance at walking again thanks to an experimental STEM implant created by a gifted scientist, but this solution comes with dangerous consequences.
Think of Upgrade like a more intense version of Venom. The STEM implant inside Grey essentially has a life of its own, and when it takes over, he gains incredible abilities. The movie delves into what exactly this implant is and why it’s happening, unraveling a complex mystery. It’s a twisty, thought-provoking film where everything is eventually explained, and the journey to the answer is genuinely enjoyable.
4) They Cloned Tyrone

They Cloned Tyrone is a funny, but also puzzling, film that tackles big issues like wealth inequality, neighborhood change, and cloning – all wrapped up in the style of 1970s blaxploitation movies. John Boyega (known from Star Wars: The Last Jedi) plays Fontaine, a drug dealer who mysteriously comes back to life after being killed, with no memory of what happened. He joins forces with a woman named Yo-Yo (Teyonah Parris, from The Marvels) and a man called Slick Charles (Jamie Foxx) to investigate the strange events unfolding in their community.
I absolutely loved this movie! Seriously, almost everyone who’s seen it has given it rave reviews – it’s got a 95% rating on Rotten Tomatoes! And the best part is, it’s a Netflix original, so it’s super easy to watch. If you’re looking for something funny, thought-provoking, and a bit sci-fi with a really powerful message, you have to check it out.
3) Synchronic

The film Synchronic initially gained attention at film festivals but was quickly overlooked after its release, likely due to the timing of the COVID-19 pandemic. It stars Anthony Mackie (known from Captain America: Brave New World) and Jamie Dornan (Fifty Shades of Grey) as paramedics who encounter a man who has overdosed on a mysterious drug called Synchronic, which has the power to send people through time.
Synchronic is a typical time travel story – complex and disorienting, focusing on the consequences of traveling through time and getting lost in the process. The plot thickens when two men attempt to rescue a daughter by going back in time, leading to a reality where nothing is as it appears. Though it didn’t do well in theaters, the film has earned a solid reputation, boasting a 79% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and is now available to watch on Netflix.
2) Tenet

Christopher Nolan is known for making complex films, and his 2020 movie, Tenet, is particularly challenging. It presents a unique take on time travel. The film stars John David Washington as an unnamed secret agent, simply known as the “Protagonist,” who is recruited by a clandestine organization.
The movie’s time travel is really complicated, and Robert Pattinson’s character guides you through it. It involves events moving backward in time and colliding with future attacks. You need to follow the plot closely to understand how the time travel actually works.
1) Donnie Darko

Donnie Darko is a beloved, but famously confusing, movie that really makes you think. A director’s cut attempted to clarify the plot, but many fans felt it diminished the film’s appeal. Luckily, the version currently streaming on Netflix is the original cut, and it remains a fantastic and thought-provoking experience. The film is directed by Richard Kelly and stars Jake Gyllenhaal as Donnie Darko.
The movie begins with Donnie mysteriously sleepwalking into the countryside. When he returns home the next morning, he discovers a piece of an airplane has crashed through his bedroom. He soon learns he was destined to die, and starts experiencing bizarre events that lead him to believe a catastrophe is coming – one he might be able to prevent. The film’s confusing nature is precisely what makes Donnie Darko so compelling.
