The Marvel 2099 universe first appeared in 1992 with the comic Spider-Man 2099 #1, introducing Miguel O’Hara and a world over a century in the future. Though initially planned as a collaboration between Stan Lee and John Byrne, Byrne eventually left Marvel to create his own series, Next Men, and Lee continued the project by reimagining Marvel heroes in a futuristic setting. Set on Earth-928, the original 2099 line ended in 1998, but the characters have continued to appear in other comics. Now, a new comic called The End 2099 has revived these characters for a storyline similar to Contest of Champions, where they battle for Mephisto against the Abyssal Warriors.
This list showcases the most powerful characters from Marvel‘s 2099 universe, starting with the original hero, Spider-Man 2099, and including the latest villains threatening that future.
10) Spider-Man

Miguel O’Hara is Spider-Man 2099, but he’s not related to the original Spider-Man, Peter Parker – he simply took on the same hero identity. He worked for a company called Alchemax, where he was testing a way to alter human genetics. When Alchemax tried to eliminate him to cover up shady practices, O’Hara survived and became Spider-Man.
Miguel O’Hara, also known as Spider-Man 2099, shares some abilities with the original Spider-Man because of spider DNA. However, he also has unique powers, like night vision and faster healing. Unlike Peter Parker, he possesses natural talons, fangs, and creates his own webbing organically. Despite these abilities, he isn’t considered one of the most powerful heroes in the Marvel 2099 universe.
9) Deadpool

Warda Wilson is Deadpool 2099, the daughter of Wade Wilson (Deadpool) and the underworld queen, Shiklah. Surprisingly, Deadpool didn’t know he had a daughter. After Shiklah vanished, Warda captured her father and assumed his identity. This led to a conflict with Ellie Preston, Wade’s other daughter. The story reveals that Wade originally captured Shiklah to stop her from taking over the world, and later had to transfer Emilie’s mind into his daughter to gain control. Like her father, Warda is a powerful fighter with a healing ability, but she also excels with advanced technology – a skill he lacked.
8) Moon Knight

The Moon Knight of the year 2099 is a unique take on the character. Unlike the original Moon Knight, Marc Spector, this version’s identity remains a secret, but she also serves as the avatar of the Egyptian moon god Khonshu. What’s even more different is that she actually lives on the moon, protecting the human colonists of Attilan alongside the Inhumans. Her key story involves persuading the Watcher to let the 2099 version of the Fantastic Four continue their existence. It’s believed she possesses the same abilities as Marc Spector, but amplified by her lunar environment.
7) Ghost Rider

Ghost Rider consistently ranks among the most powerful beings, regardless of who wields the power or the era they exist in. This version is Kenshiop “Zero” Cochrane, a hacker who was targeted and killed along with his gang. In his final moments, Zero connected to the digital world, transforming him into a unique Ghost Rider – a blend of machine and demon. He wields computer-based abilities like nanites for healing, a cloaking function, and laser vision. Though he lacks the traditional Hellfire and demonic strength of other Ghost Riders, he remains a formidable and dangerous force.
6) Hulk

Hulk 2099 is a distinct take on the classic Hulk. Instead of Bruce Banner, this version is John Eisenhart, a former film executive transformed by a gamma blast. While he’s incredibly strong – able to lift 150 tons – he isn’t as powerful as the original Hulk, lacking that character’s limitless strength. Eisenhart retained his intelligence, avoiding the rage that plagued Banner. However, unlike the seemingly immortal Bruce Banner, Hulk 2099 was vulnerable and was reportedly killed by SHIELD, highlighting the significant difference in their power levels.
5) Phoenix

Similar to Moon Knight, who is a mysterious avatar of Khonshu in Marvel’s 2099 future, the new host for Phoenix in that era is also a woman whose identity is currently unknown. Like Jean Grey before her, this Phoenix was one of the X-Men, and the team lived in the Savage Land in 2099 until an attack by the Cabal – originally created by Norman Osborn – forced them to relocate. This new Phoenix first appeared in Spider-Man 2000: Exodus #5 in 2022. While all the new X-Men seemed incredibly powerful, Phoenix consistently stands out as the most powerful mutant due to her immense cosmic abilities.
4) Nova (Logan)

Nova 2099 is a unique character, distinct from other Novas in the main Marvel Universe. Surprisingly, this Nova is actually James Howlett – better known as Wolverine! He’s also the last remaining member of the Nova Corps in his future timeline. A recent addition to the Marvel 2099 heroes, he first appeared as Patch in Miguel O’Hara: Spider-Man 2099 #4 and then debuted as Nova in Annihilation 2099 #1. He combines Wolverine’s abilities – including healing and adamantium claws (on one hand) with bone claws on the other – with the power to project energy blasts using the Nova Force.
3) Silver Surfer

In the year 2099, the Silver Surfer wasn’t Norrin Radd anymore – it was Jonah Marlo who held the title. This version of the Silver Surfer had a different origin, too. Instead of being created by Galactus, Jonah was offered a deal by Mephisto while on his deathbed, becoming Mephisto’s new herald. However, Jonah disliked his task – convincing people to trade their souls. Eventually, Mephisto banished him, leading Jonah to become a protector of the lost and a savior of all living things. The original Surfer reappeared in The End 2099, and remains incredibly powerful.
2) Doctor Doom

Doctor Doom 2099 is the original Doctor Doom, having been absent for many years. Upon his return, he discovered that Tyler Wylde had taken control of Latveria. Doom quickly defeated Wylde, reclaimed his country, and then turned his attention to the United States. Initially, many believed him to be a Doombot, but it was confirmed to be the genuine Doctor Doom. He ultimately rose to world leadership on Earth-928, becoming known as All-Father Doom. This version possesses all of Doom’s standard powers, enhanced by his armor and technology, as well as significant mystical abilities and nanotechnology that further boosts his strength and reaction time.
1) Abyssus

Though not originally a Marvel 2099 character, Abyssus is a major threat in the new The End 2099 series. This incredibly powerful villain is a unique combination of two ancient cosmic entities: Galactus and Knull. They’re locked in a constant power struggle, but their goals are far more extreme than simply consuming planets – they aim to destroy everything. Facing an unstoppable foe, Mephisto enlists the heroes of Marvel 2099 to confront an Abyssus team of villains and corrupted heroes, with the entire universe at stake.
