Netflix’s Returning Dark Fantasy Anime is An Instant Streaming Success

I’m so excited! One of my favorite anime, Record of Ragnarok, is back for a third season and it’s already huge on Netflix! Netflix has been really stepping up its anime game lately, releasing more and more exclusive shows. They used to have a lot of different types, but now they’re really diving into the popular shonen action stuff – like with the recent release of Sakamoto Days. And honestly, that’s awesome! Seeing Record of Ragnarok – a really dark and controversial series – return on December 10th, 2025, just proves Netflix is serious about becoming a major anime player.

The anime Record of Ragnarok has faced a lot of criticism because of its central idea: gods battling humans. This controversy grew in the second season when the depiction of the Hindu god Shiva led to the show being banned in India. Despite this, the series remains popular. FlixPatrol reports that the third season is currently the fourth most-watched series globally, and it’s also cracked the top 10 in the U.S., landing at number nine.

Record of Ragnarok Returns With Instant Success Despite the Series’ Controversy

Just days after its release, Record of Ragnarok has quickly become a popular series on Netflix, ranking among the platform’s most-watched shows alongside titles like Man vs. Baby, Stranger Things, and Sean Combs: The Reckoning. This is somewhat unexpected, considering the anime adaptation hasn’t been praised for its animation. The first two seasons actually received a lot of criticism for their visual quality, and the show’s often debated storyline added to the negative perception. However, it seems this reputation has actually helped the series, as fans are eager to find out how the story of Ragnarok will end.

The newest season of the series boasts its best animation yet, alongside a more complex and engaging story. Featuring compelling characters like Hades, Beelzebub, Qin Shi Huang, and Nikola Tesla, the writing is particularly strong, making it essential viewing for fans. With nine out of thirteen fights already animated, it looks like the story might wrap up in the next season.

There’s no official word on a fourth season yet, but the recent success of the show suggests one is possible. However, the story will first finish in the manga, and that’s still a ways off. This means fans might have to wait at least a couple of years for a new season of Record of Ragnarok, which could also be the last.
