A role-playing game series that started way back in 1995 with the Super Nintendo is getting a new installment. The RPG landscape has changed a lot since then. While Japanese RPGs, or JRPGs, were the most popular type three decades ago, they’ve largely been overtaken by newer Western RPGs. Even today’s Japanese RPGs often resemble their Western counterparts more than the JRPGs of the 90s. If you enjoyed 90s JRPGs, you probably know the Tales of series, which is still going strong. It’s updated over time, but it still stays true to its classic 90s style.
Can you believe it? Today is the 30th anniversary of the Tales of series! It feels like yesterday I first discovered it. It all started way back on December 15, 1995, with Tales of Phantasia on the SNES. While most of us probably know and love the series from PlayStation, it’s pretty cool to remember it actually began as a Nintendo exclusive. It’s amazing to see how far it’s come!
New Remasters and a New Game
To mark the success of a recent video, Bandai Namco released a special message from the series producer, Yusuke Tomizawa. Tomizawa confirmed that while recent updates have focused on newer games, remasters of older titles are planned. He didn’t reveal which games will be remastered, but mentioned that the team is also developing a brand new game – the first since 2023’s Tales of Arise.
Honestly, it wasn’t a huge shock to hear they’re working on a new Tales of game – it’s always been a big series for Bandai Namco. But looking back, there was a five-year wait between Tales of Berseria in 2016 and Tales of Arise in 2023. So, I’m kinda wondering if we’ll have to wait until 2028 for the next one! It’s hard to say, though, because the release schedule hasn’t always been so long. They used to be much faster! Before Berseria came out in 2016, Tales of Zestiria was released just the year before, in 2015. They really used to pump these games out consistently.
We’d love to hear your thoughts! Please leave a comment below or join the discussion on the ComicBook Forum. Which would you prefer: a remastered version of a classic Tales of game, or a completely new game in the series?
