Captain America is a long-standing hero in Marvel Comics, both in terms of how long he’s been featured in comics and his character’s age. First appearing in 1940, he originally fought against Nazis during World War II to defend America. After defeating the Red Skull, he seemingly perished when he crashed into the ocean, only to be frozen in ice and later revived in modern times. He then joined the Avengers. Given his long history and numerous relationships, many fans wonder if Captain America has any children within the Marvel Comics universe.
Captain America actually has children in the Marvel Comics universe, though not all of them exist within the main storyline we typically follow.
Captain America Has Kids In Other Marvel Multiversal Earths

I’ve always been fascinated by the different versions of Captain America across the multiverse, and it’s amazing to learn about his kids! There are two that really stand out to me. One is his daughter, Sarah, who appeared in a cool alternate story imagining what would have happened if the heroes hadn’t returned from the original Secret Wars. The other is his son, James, who first showed up in a Marvel animated movie and later became part of the main comic book universe in Avengers #1. It’s just incredible to see the different family dynamics explored!
Sarah Rogers presented a unique family mystery: she was the daughter of Captain America and Rogue, despite the complications Rogue’s powers would normally create. It’s unclear how they were able to have a child, but adding to the confusion, this version of Rogue wasn’t known as Anna – she went by Carol. This was likely due to Rogue having previously absorbed Carol Danvers’ powers and personality. Regardless, they ended up having a daughter together.
Sarah eventually became a superhero named Crusader, joining forces with other young heroes: Mustang (the son of She-Hulk and Hawkeye), Firefly (the son of Human Torch and Wasp), Torrent (the daughter of Wolverine and Storm), and Bravado (the son of Thor and Enchantress). Together, they were known as the Battleworld Avengers. The team discovered a portal back to Earth, but found it had been taken over by Sentinels. Determined to help, they decided to become Earth’s new protectors.
James Rogers gained recognition through his role in the Marvel animated film, Next Avengers. The movie featured the children of the original Avengers team – James being the son of Captain America and Black Widow. He was joined by Torunn, the daughter of Thor and Sif; Henry Pym Jr., the son of Wasp and Ant-Man; the son of Black Panther and Storm; and Francis Barton, Hawkeye’s son. After the original Avengers passed away, Iron Man and Vision took on the responsibility of raising and training these young heroes to become the next generation of Avengers.
This team first entered the Marvel Comics universe in Avengers #1 (2010), brought there by Kang’s time travel. They were established as being from Earth-10943 and appeared in two issues of that series, followed by four issues of Avengers World in 2014.
Captain America Also Has An Adopted Son On Earth-616

In Marvel Comics, Captain America does have a son, though not a biological one. The child, named Ian, was created in a test tube by Arnim Zola for mysterious purposes. Captain America found Ian as a baby and they spent eleven years together in another dimension. Later, Ian was captured and manipulated into fighting Captain America, believing he was a villain, but Captain America managed to save him again. Unable to take Ian with him, Captain America left him in the care of Sharon Carter, who raised him as her own.
After arriving in Earth-616, Ian adopted the name Nomad – a title previously held by Captain America – and started searching for his father, who had aged and was now leading the Secret Avengers. He assisted the Secret Avengers in defeating Arnim Zola and then teamed up with the new Captain America, Sam Wilson. Throughout his journey, Ian viewed Steve Rogers as his father and Sharon Carter as his mother, no matter his true origins.
During the Secret Wars event, Ian Rogers, also known as Nomad, encountered Ellie Rogers, the daughter of Captain America and Sharon Carter, on Battleworld – a reality created by Doctor Doom. Ellie was fighting against Arnim Zola and his Hydra forces as part of the resistance. Although Nomad and Ellie managed to escape, Ellie sadly died from her injuries. Ian Rogers later returned to the main Marvel Universe and continued his work as Nomad, most recently appearing in Captain America Finale in 2023.
