New ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Plot Rumor Retcons Captain America’s Arc

Be warned, this article contains spoilers for the upcoming film, Avengers: Doomsday. Marvel fans are buzzing after a leaked trailer appears to show a surprising return for Steve Rogers, Captain America, and a major change to his story from the Infinity Saga. Many believed Steve finally got his happy ending with Peggy Carter at the end of Endgame. However, the trailer suggests he doesn’t stay young and doesn’t return to the present as we thought. Instead, he comes back as an older man and passes the Captain America shield to Sam Wilson, which fans interpreted as Chris Evans leaving the role and the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

It’s been over six years since Chris Evans retired as Captain America, but recent reports suggest Steve Rogers will be back, and will be a major part of the next Avengers movie. Unconfirmed trailer footage appears to show Steve riding a motorcycle and with his son, followed by the message ‘Steve Rogers Will Return in Avengers: Doomsday’. Another rumored clip shows Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom visiting Steve’s home, potentially hinting at the movie’s plot. If Steve does return, it would mean the peaceful ending he received in Endgame wasn’t as conclusive as we believed, and carries a darker meaning in hindsight.

Steve May Have Made a Massive Mistake, and it Could Spell His Doom

The heartwarming scene of Steve Rogers dancing with Peggy Carter at the end of Endgame might unexpectedly lead to trouble with Doctor Doom. While many fans believed Captain America simply returned the Infinity Stones to their original timelines, the directors of Endgame have a different view of time travel. This opens up the possibility that Steve’s choice to stay in the past was actually a selfish one with huge consequences. Some fans speculate that his decision created a disruption in the timeline – an ‘incursion’ – which could have destroyed Doctor Doom’s home planet. If this is true, it would explain why Doom seeks revenge on Steve, and even Steve’s planet. Doom would have a strong reason to want to destroy everything Steve cares about, as Steve’s actions may have cost him his home and possibly his family.

Connecting Doomsday directly to Endgame – something Marvel is reportedly thinking about – would perfectly position Doctor Doom as the type of villain the Russo brothers find most compelling. As Joe Russo explained to Omelete, they prefer villains who see themselves as the good guys, believing this makes them more complex and interesting. Like Thanos, who had a clear reason for his actions, Doom would have strong motivations for seeking revenge, giving Robert Downey Jr. a rich character to portray. The Russos prioritize creating well-developed, multi-faceted characters, and Doom would offer that opportunity.

As a fan, I think bringing Chris Evans back as Captain America could actually fix a lot of things Marvel has done, even if it means changing his story from the Infinity Saga. It’s wild to think Steve, now a dad, could accidentally start a huge conflict with someone as powerful as Doctor Doom! That would be a whole new level of stakes for him in the MCU. We all thought we got a happy ending for Steve, so it’s a bit scary to imagine things could turn out much worse. Honestly, I think Marvel is being really smart with this. It’ll get us excited to see the original Avengers again, introduce us to new heroes, and… well, they might even kill Cap off. It would give Evans a clean exit to do other things. Knowing Steve, and how he’s always put others first, he’d be willing to sacrifice everything – even his child, like Tony Stark had to – especially since he’s the one who stirred up trouble with Doom in the first place.

‘Doomsday’ Being a Direct Sequel to ‘Endgame’ is the Best Decision Marvel Could Make

Ever since the huge success of Endgame in 2019, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has faced some challenges. Fans knew it would be difficult to follow up such a massive, satisfying event – especially the epic battle with Thanos. While Spider-Man: No Way Home was a hit, many subsequent Marvel movies didn’t live up to expectations, leading to a decline in fan interest. Films like Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and The Marvels left audiences disappointed, and Marvel needed to decide whether to continue as before or make big changes to regain its popularity. The first hints of a new direction came with the news that Robert Downey Jr. would return as Doom, despite his character’s death in Endgame. Now, with rumors that Chris Evans is coming back as Captain America, Marvel seems to be revisiting the dynamic of Captain America: Civil War – pitting its major heroes against each other.

Look, I get why some fans might not love seeing Marvel revisit familiar ground, but honestly, it’s a brilliant move right now. Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans are still huge draws – they will get people into theaters for Doomsday. Their presence means money, plain and simple. And if Captain America’s story is heading in a surprising direction after the Infinity Saga, you know fans will show up to see it. What’s really exciting is that Doomsday seems designed so you don’t need to have followed everything that happened in the shows and movies after Endgame to enjoy it. That’s huge! It basically gives Marvel a chance to wipe the slate clean and address some of the things that haven’t worked. That’ll make the movie way more accessible and even attract new fans. If the Russo brothers can smoothly explain how Cap returning the stones caused the incursion, and juggle introducing the X-Men, Young Avengers, New Avengers, and Fantastic Four all in one film, then Avengers: Doomsday could be exactly the fresh start the MCU needs.
