The Fallout series, created by Xbox and Bethesda, is famous for its role-playing games, but one title stands out as different. Fallout Shelter, a popular free-to-play game where you build and manage a vault, isn’t a traditional RPG. It’s been available since 2015, the same year as the release of Fallout 4.
Fallout Shelter initially launched on iOS and Android devices, and was later released on Xbox, PlayStation, and PC. While console and PC versions stopped receiving updates for a while, both the Steam and mobile versions have recently been updated with ‘Viva New Vegas.’ This update marks the beginning of ‘Seasons’ – a series of planned updates – for the game, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary.
Taking inspiration from both Season 2 of the Fallout TV show (which is now available a day earlier than expected) and the popular 2010 game Fallout: New Vegas, the ‘Viva New Vegas’ update lets you construct, manage, and improve a brand new Vault in Novac – a familiar location from the start of Fallout: New Vegas.
The Vault you build in Novac is independent from your main Vault. As you expand it, characters from the TV show – including Lucy, Maximus, and The Ghoul – will come to visit, offering new quests and challenges to help rebuild New Vegas. Completing these quests earns you rewards like weapons, outfits, and recipes. You can also get rewards by progressing through the Viva New Vegas Season Pass, and all of these items will be available in both Vaults.
You can also earn rewards through Lucky Spins, a fun feature where you spin a wheel using chips you collect while playing. These chips are earned by completing quests or found as you explore. The wheel can land on prizes like Bottle Caps (the game’s currency), useful supplies for your explorers, and other helpful items.

Bethesda introduced Fallout Shelter Seasons in October as limited-time events based on the questionable experiments Vault-Tec conducted in its various Vaults. Players can participate in these Seasons to complete challenges and unlock rewards as they advance.
Fallout Shelter’s production director, Veronique Bruneau, shared how much player-created content she’s seen over the last decade. Players constantly share their best vault designs and helpful tips, and Veronique has even learned a few things from them! She’s excited to see what players create with the upcoming new features.
I’ve noticed the developers are planning to announce more ‘Seasons’ content in the months ahead, and it sounds like Viva New Vegas is just the beginning. They haven’t said when this content will end yet, but I’m confident Bethesda will give fans plenty of notice before that happens.
Looking ahead to future seasons, I expect we’ll see content drawing inspiration from other Fallout games like Fallout 3 and Fallout 76. They might even explore the interesting stories found within the various Vaults from those games. It’s worth mentioning that all these titles are available to play with an Xbox Game Pass subscription on Xbox or PC.
With an incredible 230 million players since 2015, it’s great that Bethesda continues to update Fallout Shelter with new content. It’s also welcome news that the PC version now matches the mobile versions in terms of features, and hopefully console players will receive similar updates soon.
