As a huge fan of the X-Men, I’ve always seen them as the face of mutants – that evolved subspecies of humanity known as Homo Superior. It totally makes sense, because in the Marvel universe, they’re the biggest champions of peaceful coexistence between humans and mutants, constantly fighting for mutant rights. Over time, the X-Men and all its related teams have grown to include a ton of mutants – even some who started as villains – all working together against those who would oppress them. Things really changed when they formed Krakoa, a nation that welcomed every mutant on Earth! But even with all that, not every mutant wants to be an X-Man. There are plenty of amazing mutant heroes out there who choose to protect people on their own or as part of other teams, and I love seeing that diversity.
As a lifelong fan, I’ve always been fascinated by the mutants who don’t join the X-Men. There are so many reasons why they choose different paths. Some are fiercely dedicated to their nations or existing teams and just don’t want to switch allegiances. Others are total loners, preferring to avoid the whole human/mutant conflict. But it’s kind of amazing when you think about it: these mutants choosing to live among humans, instead of isolating themselves at the Xavier Institute or on Krakoa, actually shows us that peaceful coexistence is possible. They’re living proof, really, that humans and mutants can get along.
7) Molly Hayes

Molly Hayes is the youngest member of the Runaways, a team of teenagers who learned their parents were part of a powerful criminal organization called the Pride. After defeating their parents, the Runaways dedicated themselves to protecting Los Angeles. Molly’s unique genetic makeup gives her incredible strength and resilience, letting her perform amazing feats like lifting the giant superhero Giant Man and knocking a Skrull enemy clear over a building with a single punch. However, using her powers quickly exhausts her. The X-Men have repeatedly asked Molly to join them, but she always chooses to stay with the Runaways, who she considers her true family.
6) Great Lakes Avengers

The Great Lakes Avengers are a unique team of mutant superheroes, separate from the more famous X-Men. They boast impressive powers: Mr. Immortal can’t be killed, Big Bertha grows to enormous size for incredible strength, Flatman stretches like a rubber band, and Doorman can teleport and move through walls. Despite these abilities, they’re often seen as a joke. They even tried to join the X-Men family by calling themselves the Great Lakes X-Men (GLX), but Jean Grey, using her telepathy, made Mr. Immortal change the name back. Now known once again as the Great Lakes Avengers, they continue to defend the people of the Midwest.
5) Vanguard

Most mutants support each other, but Nicolai Krylenko, known as Vanguard, is different. He’s fiercely loyal to Russia and a key member of the Winter Guard, the country’s superhero team. Though his sister is the hero Darkstar, who has worked with the X-Men’s X-Corporation, Vanguard has always remained dedicated to his homeland and hasn’t joined any of Marvel’s X-Teams. Vanguard possesses the incredible ability to deflect any attack, whether it’s energy blasts or even a speeding train. He also uses a strong vibranium shield for both protection and as a weapon. He identifies as Russian above all else, and that’s why he refuses to compromise his country’s interests by aligning with the X-Men.
4) Persuasion

Kara Killgrave, also known as Persuasion, is the daughter of the supervillain Purple Man and shares his ability to control minds. She releases chemicals that let her manipulate people’s thoughts, even affecting large groups. Because she’s embarrassed by her family history and powers, she struggles to commit to any one team for very long. She’s been part of Alpha Flight, Beta Flight, and even the Thunderbolts, but she constantly moves on, worried she might abuse her abilities.
3) Justice

Vance Astrovik, known as Justice, is a mutant with powerful telekinetic abilities – he can move things with his mind. He’s been a key member of several superhero teams, including the New Warriors and the Avengers, but surprisingly, never the X-Men. Now, he’s a teacher at Avengers Academy, helping train the next generation of heroes. His powers allow him to fly, become incredibly strong, create protective shields, and unleash powerful energy blasts. He’s used these abilities to fight enormous creatures, even hold off the Guardians of the Galaxy, and once saved a collapsing bridge. Because of his strong bonds with the New Warriors and the Avengers, Justice is committed to those teams and won’t be joining the X-Men.
2) Namora

In the 1990s, Marvel revealed that Namor the Sub-Mariner, a complex hero from Atlantis, carries the X-Gene, which gives him the ability to grow wings on his feet. While Namor has officially been an X-Man, his cousin, Namora, hasn’t. Like Namor, she’s a hybrid of human and Atlantean, and her X-Gene also gives her small wings, allowing her to fly at speeds up to 60 miles per hour. As an Atlantean hybrid, Namora can breathe underwater, lives for a very long time, and can talk to sea creatures. She’s incredibly strong too – capable of lifting battleships, defeating powerful foes like Super Skrull, and even overpowering Captain Marvel. Namora has been a dedicated member of the Agents of Atlas for years, but she’s rarely worked with the X-Men.
1) Mr. M

Unlike most mutants who have chosen sides in the human-mutant conflict, Absolon Mercator, known as Mr. M, remains neutral and keeps to himself. He’s an exceptionally powerful mutant – an Omega-Level mutant – with the ability to alter reality. He can create incredible displays of power, like a miniature nuclear explosion, and even restore or remove other mutants’ abilities, or drastically change a person’s form. Despite possessing such god-like powers, Mr. M is a pacifist who only uses them to assist others. His strong desire for independence and privacy has led him to decline involvement with both the X-Men and the nation of Krakoa.
