So, it’s been more than a week since Yakuza Kiwami got that PS5 upgrade, and we finally got some news about the issues with how it all rolled out. Honestly, it was a bit of a mess at first, and I was getting worried, but it looks like they’re addressing it now.
Players who already bought the original game digitally on PlayStation 4 should be able to upgrade to the new version for just $1.99. However, the upgrade isn’t working for many, and SEGA hasn’t said anything about fixing the problem.
We successfully updated to Yakuza Kiwami 2, but Yakuza Kiwami, the remake of the first game, is still showing up at its original price. Many others are reporting the same problem on social media.
Now, dev RGG Studio has finally put out a statement on X (or Twitter):
We know some players are having trouble with the owner discount for Yakuza Kiwami on PlayStation 5. We’re working on a fix, but it will take a little longer to resolve. We’re sorry for the trouble and appreciate your patience. We’ll keep you updated here, and thank you for continuing to support the Yakuza and Like a Dragon series.
So, there’s no real solution from the studio here, but the acknowledgement alone is welcome.
It’s worth noting that SEGA and RGG Studio aren’t alone in facing issues with Sony’s unusual digital ownership rules, and this likely won’t be the last game affected.
Although the problem seems to stem from PlayStation’s outdated system, the developers really need to be faster at letting players know when things go wrong. Waiting a full week to address such a widespread issue isn’t good enough.
