Bungie, the company behind the game, recently showed off more of its upcoming shooter, Marathon. They shared new gameplay and details about changes made since the game’s release was pushed back from its original 2025 date.
Bungie is shifting the game towards a more serious and gritty science-fiction feel. When players are defeated, their bodies will now stay in the game world and decompose over time, rather than simply disappearing. This new feature provides a visual clue to other players about potential dangers nearby – the fresher the corpse, the more recently a player was defeated in that area.
I’m really excited about the latest updates! Based on what players said during the alpha test, they’ve added a solo queue option, which is huge. Now, if you just want to jump in and play as a single Runner without needing a squad, you totally can!
Marathon now features a nearby voice chat system, creating opportunities for players to connect while exploring the game world. This could lead to interesting interactions, like squads choosing to cooperate or compete with each other.
Bungie hasn’t announced the exact date yet, but they’re aiming to release Marathon sometime in March 2026.
Marathon won’t cost the typical full price for a new game; it will be available for $40 in the U.S. Unlike some other games, any rewards passes you purchase won’t expire, and you’ll be able to buy and complete older passes – similar to how it works in games like Halo Infinite and Helldivers 2.
Bungie hasn’t shared specifics yet, but they promise players who buy the game will receive several free updates throughout the year, including new maps and customization options. More details about the update schedule will be revealed closer to the game’s launch.
Marathon will be Bungie’s first brand new game since Destiny 2 in 2017.
