
Crystal Dynamics is charting a course for the future of Tomb Raider with the upcoming Tomb Raider: Catalyst. However, they’re also revisiting the series’ origins with Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis. In a recent interview with VideoGamesChronicle, studio head Scott Amos and game director Will Kerslake described Legacy of Atlantis as a passion project created by fans, for fans, and discussed whether it will be a true remake or a fresh take on the classic game.
Amos highlighted that Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis is a fantastic way to mark the franchise’s 30th anniversary, as the very first Tomb Raider game was released in 1996. He also pointed out the game will stay true to the original design choices made by Core Design, the game’s initial developers. To accomplish this, the team is using Unreal Engine 5 and addressing criticisms from the original game with improvements.
The team created Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis as a tribute to the original game and its fans. Knowing the 30th anniversary was approaching, they wanted to create something special that honored the spirit and design of the very first Tomb Raider, which laid the foundation for everything the franchise has become over the last three decades.
We’re calling this a reimagining because we rebuilt the entire game from the ground up using Unreal Engine 5. We took everything players loved about the original and asked ourselves how to update it for today’s gamers. This means things that were once simple backgrounds are now fully realized, detailed 3D environments.
The updated version of Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis will offer a fresh experience with modern controls and gameplay. It will also recreate beloved moments from the original game, like the famous T.Rex battle, in a way that feels new and exciting for both new and existing players. Long-time fans will get to relive those classic experiences, while newcomers will have the chance to create their own unforgettable memories.
The remake will both respect the original game and update it for modern audiences. According to Kerslake, a key focus is the visual upgrade, leveraging the advancements in Unreal Engine 5.30 over the past 30 years. The aim is to capture the feeling of the original while delivering a modern gameplay experience. Some elements of the game will remain unchanged to preserve its core identity.
As you saw in the trailer, we’re using today’s technology to make these locations feel incredibly immersive. We want to recreate those iconic moments – like falling from the bridge into the wolf den or encountering the T. rex – that players vividly remember from the original game, and give new players equally memorable experiences.
