Microsoft has released a new preview version of Windows 11 to its Canary Channel Insiders. This update includes many features that were previously tested with other Insider groups. While the Canary Channel isn’t quite up to date with *all* the latest previews, it now offers most of the features currently being tested.
The latest Canary Channel update is version 28020.1362. It includes several improvements, like the ability to use the full-screen Xbox experience on more portable devices. You’ll also notice a redesigned context menu in Click To Do and a better search experience in Windows Settings, which now displays more customizable options and suggestions directly in the search box.
The latest preview build for the Canary Channel also includes several new improvements, such as a drag-and-drop tray for file sharing, Windows Studio Effects support for any webcam, more detailed mobile device settings within the Windows Settings app, and a refined dark mode for File Explorer. These features are now being released to users.
The Windows Insider Canary Channel hasn’t been getting new features as quickly as the Dev and Beta Channels. This is because features are initially developed and tested on the current release of Windows, known as Germanium, which is what’s being tested in the Dev and Beta Channels.
The Canary Channel runs on a more recent version of Windows, internally known as Bromine. This version has improved underlying technology, but since major new features aren’t being actively built for it yet, it takes longer for those features to become available to users.
Users in the Canary Channel often have to wait a while – sometimes weeks or months – to try out new features that were first tested with other Insider groups. However, Microsoft seems to be improving how quickly it updates the Canary Channel, and eventually, it plans to use the Bromine channel for the main development of new features.
The next major update to Windows 11, codenamed Bromine and versioned as 26H1, will initially launch in 2026 on new devices powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon X2 chip. While it will eventually be available to all users, the wider release is expected with version 26H2 in the latter half of next year.
