Paranormal Activity review: Theatre horror that startles rather than haunts

The movie Paranormal Activity has been adapted for the stage by Felix Barrett (director) and Levi Holloway (writer). This new version focuses on building suspense and using theatrical effects, rather than relying on jump scares and intense frights.

Great horror movies aren’t simply about jump scares; they often delve into complex emotions and the human mind. Director Holloway seems particularly interested in these themes. He explained in an interview with TopMob that people carry emotional baggage, and when two people with past traumas enter a relationship, problems can arise.

This story revolves around Lou and James, an American couple who relocate from Chicago to the UK.

Melissa James and Patrick Heusinger deliver strong, believable performances, making the play feel real and often uncomfortably familiar. Right from the start, the audience can sense problems in their relationship, and small moments of tension and misunderstanding build as strange, supernatural things begin to happen.

The production is most effective when it fully embraces the dramatic possibilities of live theater. It recognizes that theater can offer horror experiences beyond just acting, utilizing the environment and sound design to create suspense. Things like flashing lights, darkness, and unexpected noises build a disturbing mood, and the overall design plays a key role in creating that feeling.

Let me tell you, the set design in this production is phenomenal. It’s not just a backdrop; this two-story house feels like a character in its own right, designed by Fly Davis. The story moves through all its rooms and levels, constantly surprising you with how it uses space. Some moments hit you immediately, while others really creep up on you – I found myself thinking about certain scenes long after I left the theatre. It’s a truly immersive experience.

Paranormal Activity relies more on jump scares and building suspense than creating a truly terrifying atmosphere. While it might not haunt your dreams, it offers some genuinely startling moments while you’re watching it, and that’s where its strength lies.
