Recently, several video game adaptations have been successful, but one of the best is the Netflix series based on the world of League of Legends. The show ran for two seasons and received perfect scores on Rotten Tomatoes, leaving many fans disappointed that it wasn’t renewed for more.
Nine months after it finished airing, the show has quickly become one of the most popular on the Apple TV store, climbing to number two. It’s now more popular than both Landman and the classic comedy Monk. Only Angel, a spin-off of Buffy the Vampire Slayer which has gained renewed interest with the announcement of a Buffy revival, is currently performing better.
With popular video games increasingly becoming TV shows and movies – like the recent, big-budget adaptations of Fallout and The Last of Us – it’s easy for shows like Arcane to get overlooked on platforms like Netflix. Created by Christian Linke and Alex Yee, Arcane features the voices of Hailee Steinfeld and Ella Purnell as Vi and Jinx, respectively. Notably, the series was incredibly expensive to produce, costing $250 million for its 18 episodes, making it one of the priciest animated TV shows ever made.
What is ‘Arcane’ About?
The story of Arcane centers around the tensions between Piltover, a prosperous and seemingly perfect city, and Zaun, its troubled and neglected undercity. It primarily follows the paths of two orphaned sisters, Vi and Powder (who later becomes known as Jinx). After a devastating event separates them, the sisters end up on opposite sides of the growing conflict. Vi teams up with a Piltover law enforcer to try and quell the increasing violence, while Powder, as Jinx, aligns herself with a dangerous crime boss, becoming a chaotic and unpredictable threat.
It’s rare for a TV show to nail its first season, but Arcane did even better, achieving perfect critical scores for both of its seasons. Critics loved the performances from Hailee Steinfeld, Ella Purnell, and the entire cast, as well as the show’s innovative animation and exciting action sequences. It was a shame to see Arcane end after its second season, despite its success.
Fans are still excited for more shows based on this universe, and the popularity of Arcane on the Apple Store proves there’s a large audience interested. Christian Linke, a co-creator of the series, has already confirmed that additional stories are planned for the future.
As a huge fan of Arcane, I’m thrilled with how the story unfolded in season two, but also a little sad it’s the end of this particular arc. From the start, the creators knew how they wanted to finish things with these characters, and they really stuck the landing. However, the exciting news is that Arcane is only the first story they plan to tell set in the world of Runeterra, and I can’t wait to see what comes next, especially knowing Fortiche is still involved – their animation is just incredible!
While there aren’t any official plans for new shows or series based on League of Legends right now, it’s likely we’ll see more content in the future.
