One of the Best Crime Movies of the ’90s Is Being Rebooted as a TV Series (And It Could Work)

Kathryn Bigelow’s 1991 film, Point Break, became a beloved classic and a standout action thriller, famously starring Keanu Reeves and Patrick Swayze. The movie centers on young FBI agent Johnny Utah (Reeves) who goes undercover to investigate a group of bank robbers called the “Ex-Presidents,” led by the captivating and thoughtful surfer, Bodhi (Swayze). Despite a potentially far-fetched story, Bigelow’s energetic directing and the surprisingly strong connection between the two main characters made the film a hit and inspired later action movies like The Fast and the Furious. Although a 2015 remake didn’t live up to the original, the Point Break story is now being reimagined for television with a new take.

According to Variety, AMC Networks is working on a Point Break television series. The project is a partnership between Alcon Television Group and AMC Studios, with Dave Kalstein writing and executive producing. Kalstein, who previously worked on shows like Treadstone and Quantico, brings a lot of experience with action and spy stories to the table. Importantly, this series isn’t a remake; it’s planned as a sequel, set in 2026 – thirty years after the original movie. However, AMC hasn’t officially greenlit the series yet. It’s still in development, and whether it moves forward depends on if AMC executives like Kalstein’s script and believe it can work as an ongoing TV show.

A Point Break TV Show Could Actually Be Great

Choosing to continue the story of Point Break instead of starting over with a reboot is a smart move, especially considering the 2015 film wasn’t well-received. By recognizing the 35-year time jump, the series can follow the successful “legacy sequel” format seen in shows like Cobra Kai and films like Top Gun: Maverick. Setting the story in 2026 also updates the world, reflecting how much things have changed since the original film – things like surveillance technology, extreme sports, and feelings about authority. Initial details suggest the plot will center on a new heist committed by a reformed version of the Ex-Presidents gang. This implies that even though Bodhi is gone, his ideas continue to influence a new group of criminals who are carrying on his legacy.

AMC has successfully produced morally complicated crime dramas before, notably Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, which explored the shifting boundaries between criminals and law enforcement. Point Break fits perfectly within that same complex space, as its central idea has always been about how easily someone enforcing the law can be tempted to cross over. A television series format will allow the creators to carefully build the tension and show the gradual breakdown of an officer’s morals as they become involved with the group of former presidents.
