Disney+ is the main streaming home for many of the highest-grossing films ever made, including huge franchises like Avatar, Star Wars, and Marvel. However, the biggest single movie that isn’t part of a franchise originally came from Paramount and has been available on almost every streaming platform. This week, Netflix added it back to their selection, even though it wasn’t mentioned in their December announcement.
James Cameron’s classic film, Titanic, returned to Netflix in the U.S. on Tuesday, December 16th. Released in 1997, it’s one of just a few movies from before the year 2000 to earn over $1 billion worldwide – it actually made more than $2.2 billion! Starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet, Titanic turned the story of the famous ship disaster into a massive blockbuster, and it held the record for the highest-grossing movie of all time for over a decade, until Cameron himself surpassed it with Avatar.
While Titanic has appeared on Netflix in the past, many longtime subscribers won’t be surprised to see it back. However, it hasn’t been available for a while. It’s unusual that Netflix didn’t announce its return in their December newsletter or promote it afterwards, considering how popular and well-known the movie is.
Coming Soon to Netflix
Just as Netflix has been releasing a string of popular and well-received original movies like Frankenstein, Jay Kelly, and Wake Up Dead Man, the classic film Titanic is now available to stream. This continues a strong year for Netflix originals and suggests a promising lineup for 2026.
Netflix announced its January releases, and there’s plenty to be excited about! January 1st is packed with new movies, including popular titles like Despicable Me, Dune, Pitch Perfect, and Hellboy. That day also marks the return of all five seasons of the sci-fi series Falling Skies, which hasn’t been available on major streaming platforms for some time.
