For several decades, Green Lantern has battled evil using the strength of his will as his power source. However, DC’s Earth One graphic novel series, known for reimagining the origins and adventures of famous DC characters, recently made a significant change to Hal Jordan’s backstory. Similar to how DC’s Absolute Universe is continuously reinventing heroes and villains, DC Earth One provides new origin stories and heroic journeys for popular characters like Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman. Notably, both volumes of the Green Lantern Earth One series have given Hal Jordan a distinctive treatment within this label.
In the Earth One version of the Green Lantern comics, there are some significant differences from the original storyline. For instance, John Stewart, Hal Jordan’s fellow Green Lantern, is initially depicted as a Yellow Lantern instead of a traditional Green Lantern. This is just one example among many alterations made. Additionally, prior to becoming a Green Lantern, Hal Jordan is portrayed as an astronaut by default, given the space-centric nature of his adventures. This change in his origin story, particularly the astronaut aspect, is one of the most intriguing modifications introduced in Green Lantern: Earth One.
Hal Jordan Finally Becomes an Astronaut in Green Lantern Earth One
In the revamped Green Lantern universe of DC Comics’ Earth One, Ferris Galactic is a firm that extracts minerals from asteroids in deep space. Hal Jordan, one of their miners, discovers an alien spaceship on a mined asteroid and finds the Power Ring, battery, and the fallen Lantern Abin Sur within it. This discovery sets off a thrilling cosmic journey for Hal as he assumes the role of a Green Lantern, recounting his new origin story. Interestingly, this version of the story also reimagines Hal Jordan as an astronaut.
It’s worth noting that Hal isn’t an astronaut from NASA, but his occupation of asteroid mining requires similar training due to the hazards associated with space travel. Since being a Green Lantern involves a unique form of alien astronaut training, his new job in space mining made his reinterpretation in Green Lantern Earth One an interesting adaptation among the many significant changes made to DC’s famous characters in the comic book series.
Hal Jordan’s Test Pilot Background Fits Green Lantern (but Earth One Takes Him to His Natural Evolution)
In typical DC comics lore, Hal Jordan’s background is reminiscent of the movie “Top Gun”, given that he was a skilled test pilot. This role perfectly sets the stage for his transformation into Green Lantern. As a pilot, Hal embodied courage, adventure-seeking, and fearlessness – traits essential for new members joining the Green Lantern Corps. His fearlessness turned out to be crucial in the Green Lantern legend as it evolved, with each Lantern Corps symbolizing specific emotions. For instance, green stands for willpower, while yellow represents fear.
As a follower of the Green Lantern Corps, I’ve learned that our ability to conquer fear is something we all possess, including Hal Jordan, John Stewart, and every other human and alien member of our ranks. For instance, Hal’s career as a test pilot and John’s service in the Marines create a thematic foundation for their roles as Green Lanterns. However, it’s worth noting that setting Hal up as a space miner before he became a Lantern further emphasizes the natural fit of a human among us, given his origins beyond Earth.
Hal Jordan (Or Any Green Lantern) as an Astronaut Took Too Long, but It Was Worth the Wait
Regardless of whether it’s Hal Jordan, John Stewart, Kyle Rayner, Guy Gardner, or any other human or extraterrestrial Green Lantern, they all share the profession of “cosmic peacekeeper”. Although it may appear overly obvious to assign Hal such a role that frequently sends him into space, given his future in the Green Lantern Corps, it is incredibly suitable for a retelling of the Green Lantern saga. In many ways, it seems as if Hal has been destined for the stars all along, with the Power Ring granting him abilities beyond what he ever dared to imagine.
It’s somewhat unexpected to think back now that the DC Earth One era was when Hal Jordan or any human Green Lantern was first sent into space, serving as the basis for their Green Lantern origin story. However, the epic space journey presented in the Green Lantern Earth One series from its very beginning – where Hal Jordan is a miner in an astronaut suit – proved to be a worthwhile wait, and remains a captivating reinterpretation of the Green Lantern legend even today.
