For Tom Brady, age is just a number.
The former NFL player, 48, retired in 2023 after playing for 23 seasons, but says he’d be ready to play again if he wanted to.
Honestly, listening to him on The Big Podcast with Shaq recently, he made it crystal clear he’s still got it! He told Shaq and Adam Lefkoe on December 17th that he’s ready to jump back in and compete right now. He even said with just a month of training, he could go toe-to-toe with anyone in the league. It’s amazing to see that fire still burning!
Tom Brady, the seven-time Super Bowl champion, said he felt great physically throughout his 23-year career, playing for the New England Patriots for 20 seasons and then the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for three. He believes he was able to maintain peak condition and handle everything the sport demanded.
However, he added that he was ready to slow down.
Honestly, I completely understand where Tom’s coming from. He’s saying he’s not ready to commit to playing right now, and you can really feel his hesitation. He compares it to a full basketball season – 82 games is a huge commitment, requiring intense training. He just doesn’t feel up for that level of dedication anymore, and as a fan, I respect that. It’s tough, but he’s being honest about where he’s at.
And if the announcer were to come out of retirement again, it wouldn’t be his first time. He previously announced his retirement in February 2022, but then decided to return for another season, realizing he wasn’t ready to stop just yet.
He explained that he decided to talk to his family about it, saying he wanted to try one more time if they were on board. He recalled his wife being incredibly supportive, telling him she wanted him to be happy, enjoy himself, and go out and win, according to an April 2022 interview with Complex.
Tom Brady, who finalized his divorce from Gisele Bündchen in October 2022, explained his return to football: “I came back to win. At this stage in my career, that’s my only motivation.”

I remember him saying back then that he was still really excited about playing, but he was firm about turning 50 being his absolute cutoff point. He wouldn’t play past that, no matter what.
He believes he could continue playing professionally until age 50, but doesn’t think he will. He understands the significant dedication required and, more importantly, wants to spend time with his three children, ages nine, twelve, and fourteen, who deserve his attention as they grow up. Being away from them is difficult, and he wants to prioritize their needs.
Tom, who has three children – Benjamin (16) and Vivian (13) with Gisele, and Jack (18) with Bridget Moynahan – explained his philosophy by saying, “I want to succeed in my career, but I also want to succeed in my personal life.”
