While we haven’t gotten many details about Cyberpunk 2 – the developers at CD Projekt Red are currently focused on releasing The Witcher 4 – a recent announcement gives us a slightly better idea of when we might see it. The game, previously called Project Orion, is one of several projects CD Projekt Red is working on as a follow-up to Cyberpunk 2077.
CD Projekt Red recently announced that its studio in Boston is growing quickly as work on Cyberpunk 2 gets underway. According to a report by Vice, this suggests the game will enter full production in 2027. Considering several more years of development will follow, Cyberpunk 2 is likely to be a next-generation game, potentially launching on the PlayStation 6 and the next Xbox console.
Cyberpunk 2077’s Sequel Is A Next-Gen Game
Even if everything goes perfectly, Cyberpunk 2 likely won’t be released until around 2029. This is later than expected for the next generation of consoles, which were anticipated to launch in 2027 or 2028. However, neither PlayStation nor Microsoft has officially announced new consoles – they’ve only said they plan to make them – so it’s hard to know for sure.
There’s a lot of talk about the next generation of consoles. Some reports suggest the PlayStation 6 might include a portable device, and many believe Microsoft will move away from traditional console designs after the Xbox Series X/S didn’t sell as well as hoped, potentially building something more like a high-end gaming PC. If Cyberpunk 2 comes out around the time these new consoles are released, we hope CD Projekt Red will learn from the issues with the original Cyberpunk 2077 and avoid releasing it on both old and new systems at the same time.
You’ll Want To Get Saving Now For That PlayStation 6
Looking forward to the next generation of consoles, it’s almost certain they’ll be costly. High RAM prices are currently impacting the entire tech industry. Consoles from this current generation haven’t seen much price relief either – the PS5 hasn’t been significantly discounted after five years, and Xbox even increased its prices recently.
With the U.S. economy becoming more unstable, things are getting increasingly expensive for everyone. This is already slowing down sales of gaming consoles and PCs, and the situation could worsen as new consoles are released. Whether you’re planning to buy a PlayStation 6 or upgrade your computer to play games like Cyberpunk 2, you should expect it to be a significant expense.
