Multiple families are navigating an unspeakable tragedy.
Following a plane crash in North Carolina that tragically killed race car driver Greg Biffle, his wife Cristina Grossu, their two children, and three other passengers, the families of those on board are sharing their sorrow.
In a statement released December 18th by NASCAR, the families affected expressed their deep sorrow and devastation over the loss of their loved ones, stating they are heartbroken beyond words.
Family members remembered Greg and Cristina, who worked as a realtor and travel agent, as loving parents and generous supporters of many causes. Their lives revolved around their children: 5-year-old Ryder and Greg’s 14-year-old daughter, Emma. Tragically, both Ryder and Emma died in the plane crash at Statesville Regional Airport on December 18th.
Emma, the 55-year-old’s daughter with his former wife, Nicole Lunders, was remembered as a kind and loving person. His son, Ryder, was described as an energetic, inquisitive, and incredibly happy child.
The Biffle family was traveling to Florida for a birthday celebration when their private jet, a Cessna Citation, crashed while landing at approximately 10:15 a.m., according to Cristina Biffle’s mother, Cathy Grossu, in a statement to People magazine.
She expressed her devastation, saying it was unthinkable that a joyful family birthday trip would end in such a tragedy. “The way it happened is just… unbearable,” she said, adding that she still couldn’t accept they were gone.
Cathy last heard from her daughter only moments before the collision.
Cathy, fighting back tears, explained that she received a troubling text message from someone on the plane: ‘We’re in trouble.’ She added, ‘We’re absolutely devastated and heartbroken.’

Besides the Biffle family, Dennis Dutton, Jack Dutton, and Craig Wadsworth also died in the crash. Investigators are still trying to determine what caused the accident.
The families of Dennis Dutton, Jack Dutton, and Craig Wadsworth shared that they were all deeply loved and will be greatly missed by everyone who knew them. They described each man as incredibly important to their lives, and said their loss has left a profound emptiness.
We’re asking for privacy, kindness, and understanding as we cope with this devastating loss. We deeply appreciate all the support and compassion our families have received. Right now, we’re focused on remembering and celebrating their lives, and being there for each other.

Look back on more of the Biffles’ family memories.
Greg Biffle had his loved ones by his side for life’s fastest moments. The NASCAR legend shared 5-year-old son Ryder with wife Cristina Gusso, and 14-year-old daughter Emma with his ex-wife Nicole Lunders.
The driver made sure to share his love of racing with his kids.

Greg eased off the gas pedal and quickly changed into dress shoes so he could dance with his daughter, Emma.

In addition to racing, Greg instilled a love of fishing in Ryder.

The racecar driver and Cristina took advantage of every moment together.

Greg and Cristina celebrated Ryder’s 5th birthday with balloons and, of course, some new racecars.

Greg never shied away from showing off his and Cristina’s date nights.

Greg’s family joined him to celebrate his induction into the North Carolina Auto Racing Hall of Fame.
