Even though the latest episode of Pluribus moves at a deliberate pace, it offers key insights into Carol’s secret motivations and hints at a major turning point for her when she encounters Manousos.
In the seventh episode of Pluribus, Carol came to the realization that she needed the Others more than they needed her, and she was overjoyed to hug Zosia when she returned. Meanwhile, Manousos faced setbacks on his way to find Carol, as an infected injury slowed him down. The eighth episode of the Apple TV sci-fi series shows Carol strengthening her bond with the Others.
Despite being rescued by them, Manousos stubbornly rejects any assistance from the Others and continues on his journey to find Carol.
How Meeting Manousos Will Change Carol In Pluribus’ Finale
I was really moved by the scene with Zosia and Carol at the end of Pluribus episode 8. It felt like Carol was gently trying to reach the person Zosia used to be, and she did it by simply asking her what she liked to eat! For a moment, it was like Zosia remembered who she was, and she actually talked about loving mango ice cream as a kid. It was a really powerful moment, like a little crack appeared in the hive mind.
Suddenly, Zosia stops speaking and tells Carol that she’s expecting a visitor. Her worried look makes it clear she’s referring to Manousos.
Carol became a serious problem for the Others when she risked Zosia’s life simply to find a way to stop the pandemic. However, Manousos has been an even bigger danger, as he was prepared to sacrifice himself to avoid becoming infected. Unlike Carol, he preferred solitude and remained ungrateful even after the Others rescued him.
Zosia and her team understand that Manousos could undo all their work with Carol. They’re right to be worried – if he joins forces with Carol, their combined determination to save humanity and fight the infection could make them a formidable and dangerous pair.
What Carol Realizes At The Diner & How Zosia Makes Her Feel Better
The Others subtly attempt to take advantage of Carol’s feelings of isolation, encouraging her to spend more time with them. She ends up staying overnight in one of their cabins and even goes on a hike with Zosia. During this time, Zosia shares details about their unique communication methods, and the group thoughtfully recreates a pivotal moment from Carol’s past by taking her back to the diner where she first felt inspired to write her novel.
At first, Carol is completely taken in by it all, and her strong feelings of nostalgia temporarily make her forget the harsh realities of the world around her.
Carol’s happy feeling doesn’t last long when she discovers the diner was actually destroyed by fire years ago. Upset, she immediately goes home. Later, Zosia arrives and asks what happened, and Carol explains that while she’s beginning to care for the Others, she feels someone needs to fix things, even if it means being left alone again.
Zosia is either deeply understanding of Carol’s feelings right now, or she’s attempting to derail Carol’s world-saving mission with a kiss. Predictably, Carol responds in kind, kissing her back.
Why Carol Starts Writing Again

The following morning, Zosia notices Carol has resumed writing. Carol shares the draft of her first chapter, but Zosia can’t shake the feeling that Carol has ulterior motives. It appears Carol is using her writing as a way to divert attention from the Others and make them believe she’s adjusting to their community. As a result, episode 8 feels like a subtle power struggle between Carol and the Others, with both sides attempting to control the other.
Carol has been quietly taking notes about the Others on her whiteboard, believing that understanding them better is the key to finding the answers she’s looking for.
If the Others have influenced her, her final encounter with Manousos will probably serve as a stark reminder of their true nature: they aren’t human, and they prey on people.
The Others’ Overarching Motive Explained
Zosia explains to Carol that she and others can communicate with each other using their body’s natural energy fields, without needing to speak. She also shares that this ability was given to them by beings from the planet Kepler 22-b. Given that the virus throughout the series has been focused on rapid spread, Zosia reveals their intention to share this special ability with other worlds.
This discovery shows the situation is much more critical than anyone realized. In Pluribus, Carol is now responsible for the fate of the entire universe, and she needs to prevent the Others from spreading a deadly virus to other planets before it’s too late.
