Savannah Guthrie is saying goodbye to Today—temporarily.
The popular host of NBC’s Today Show has announced she’ll be taking time off for vocal cord surgery and recovery.
Savannah revealed on the December 19th episode of Today that she’s been experiencing a scratchy and cracking voice. After getting checked out, she learned she has vocal nodules and a polyp. While it’s not a serious condition, she’ll need surgery in the new year and will be taking a couple of weeks off, making that day her last on air for a little while.
The 53-year-old, who shares 11-year-old Vale and 8-year-old Charley with her husband Michael Feldman, explained that viewers likely assumed she just had a long-lasting cold. She’s very happy doctors have finally found a treatment for the health issue she’s been dealing with for years.
She explained that she needs to remain completely silent while recovering from surgery, jokingly saying this means her family will be getting an early start to the Christmas season.
Fortunately, Savannah wasn’t alone in her experience. Her Today co-host, Sheneille Jones, who had undergone the same surgery, was able to offer some encouragement and share positive aspects of what can be a difficult process.

Sheinelle pointed out a positive side: this is a chance to rest. With things calming down at home, your kids will likely want to pitch in and help you out.
Shaneille also gifted Savannah the whiteboard she’d been using to stay in touch with her family while recovering her voice.

“Many successful performers have experienced this,” the new co-host of Jenna & Sheneille explained. “You might even discover you can sing like someone amazing, like Celine Dion, for example.”
Savannah shared that she lost her ability to sing before she lost her ability to speak, and she’s optimistic that the upcoming procedure will restore both.
“Who knows,” she quipped, “guys the tour is happening in 2026.”

Former Total Bellas star Nikki Bella shared that one of her breast implants moved after being hit during an elbow strike from wrestler Piper Niven in a match back in July 2025.
She reassured her sister, Bella Garcia, saying they would get the issue resolved eventually. She explained to the doctor that as soon as she finished her current commitments – implying after her divorce was finalized – she would return to address the problem and ensure everything looked its best, as she anticipated future activity and wanted it to appear presentable.

Lupita Nyong’o, known for her role in 12 Years a Slave, received a diagnosis of uterine fibroids—non-cancerous growths in or around the uterus—in 2014, the same year she won an Academy Award for her performance in the film.
She didn’t reveal her diagnosis until 2025, sharing on Instagram that she’d been privately struggling with it for over ten years.
She explained that growing up, many girls are told to expect pain with their periods and to accept it as a normal part of womanhood. This often leaves people dealing with a common issue in silence and feeling isolated.

In July 2025, the actress from Daisy Jones & The Six revealed she was hospitalized for a hernia. This happened because she had been wearing pants that were too tight, which caused a gap in her abdominal muscles.
Someone messaged Suki on X (formerly Twitter) asking why she hadn’t tweeted recently. Suki jokingly replied, explaining she’d been hiding a painful injury – a hernia caused by wearing very tight pants six months ago – and was afraid to mention it.

The former star of Beverly Hills, 90210 shared in April 2025 that he was recovering from surgery because his appendix was close to rupturing.
I recently shared with my followers that I was dealing with some stomach pain. It turned out to be a perforated appendix – thankfully, it hadn’t fully burst, but it was very close. I ended up needing to go to the emergency room to get it taken care of, and I wanted to be open about what was going on.
He added, “I’m on the road to recovery. It’s not an easy process. This is my first major surgery.”

During a soccer game against the Seattle Reign on September 14th at Lumen Field in Seattle, a midfielder for Racing Louisville collapsed after only a few minutes of play.
According to Reuters, the U.S. Women’s National Team player was seen slowly sitting down on the field with a teammate supporting her, just before collapsing. Trainers were immediately called to assess her condition.
Savannah received immediate medical attention on the field and was taken to a nearby hospital for more tests, according to a statement from the National Women’s Soccer League. They reported that she is currently in stable condition and is alert.

Adam Devine revealed that injuries from being hit by a cement truck at age 11 still cause him problems now.
“It’s been a really difficult time,” Devine shared on the In Depth With Graham Bensinger podcast in 2025. “I’ve been experiencing spasms all over my body, and doctors recently told me I was in a life-threatening situation—I was told I might not have much time left.”
He explained that his pain is intermittent, and mentioned he has some physical imperfections and minor health issues.

A former contestant on The Bachelor went to the hospital because of severe back pain. He described being in so much pain that he could only crawl on his hands and knees, and the pain worsened during a road trip with a friend.
I was sharing on my podcast recently how bizarre my recovery has been. Even now, I still get tingling sensations down to my toes, which is pretty wild! To give you some context, just a few weeks ago, I was comfortably squatting almost 300 pounds. Now? I can barely stand on one foot, let alone do a squat. It’s honestly scary – it feels like I’ve had a stroke or something. It’s a really humbling experience to realize how quickly things can change.
But with the help of a back specialist and some steroids, he added, “We’re on the mend.”

In February 2025, the former Even Stevens star revealed she was shot in the face during a birthday outing with her husband, Brendan Rooney. They were on a trip to go clay pigeon shooting when the incident occurred.
According to her Instagram post, she was accidentally shot in the face by someone at a party who fired a gun unsafely. She said @thebrendanrooney quickly helped her and took her to the hospital. She was hit five times, and one bullet narrowly missed her right eye, coming within an inch of a direct hit.
The former Kim Possible star shared that a small piece of something got stuck behind her eye. Doctors have advised against removing it with surgery right now, and they’ll continue to watch her condition, as her vision is currently normal.
The actress expressed immense gratitude for surviving a frightening experience. She shared how much she cherishes her daughters, husband, family, and friends, explaining that facing a life-threatening situation made her realize how quickly things can change. She urged everyone to hug their loved ones often, emphasizing the importance of appreciating life and the people in it.

Amy Schumer is grateful for the internet, despite its downsides, because it helped her discover a health issue. After noticing she looked “puffier” and receiving negative comments online, doctors began commenting on interviews, suggesting she might have Cushing syndrome, a condition often linked to high cortisol levels or steroid injections. This prompted Amy to realize she had been receiving steroid injections after a breast reduction and C-section. She later learned she had a form of Cushing syndrome that would resolve on its own, which she called “the greatest news imaginable.” Amy shared this update in a February 2024 newsletter, expressing relief that she was healthy.

As a lifestyle expert, I’ve seen firsthand how quickly life can change, and recently, that hit close to home. Back in December 2024, my son, who plays in the AHL, suffered a pretty scary injury during a game – he was cut by a skate and needed 25 stitches! Thankfully, he’s fully recovered now, and honestly, it was a huge relief. It really made me realize how fragile things are. I shared with ESPN just how lucky we were, because no parent ever wants to go through something like that with their child.

In March 2022, Hailey Bieber experienced a frightening health scare while having breakfast with her husband, Justin Bieber. She suddenly started having stroke-like symptoms, unable to speak and experiencing drooping on the right side of her face. Although these symptoms eventually passed, she went to the hospital for testing. Doctors discovered she had a small blood clot in her brain, which they identified as a TIA (Transient Ischemic Attack). Further investigation at UCLA revealed Hailey had a hole in her heart, called a patent foramen ovale (PFO). This hole allowed the blood clot to travel to her brain, causing the TIA. Hailey has since undergone a successful procedure to close the PFO and is now feeling well.

As if 2022 wasn’t challenging enough, Justin also faced a health battle. He revealed he was diagnosed with Ramsay Hunt syndrome, which caused paralysis on one side of his face. It was really scary to watch, as it affected his ability to blink, smile, and even eat. He bravely shared a video explaining what was happening, showing everyone the extent of the paralysis. Thankfully, after a lot of worry, he’s made a full recovery! It was a really random and frightening experience, but he’s doing so much better now, and I’m incredibly grateful he’s okay. It just goes to show you never know what life will throw your way, and it’s so important to cherish your health and support those you love.

Jamie Foxx recently shared details about the serious health scare he experienced in April 2023, which he had initially kept private. In his 2024 Netflix special, What Had Happened Was…, he explained that he was suffering from a severe headache when he suddenly lost consciousness. He doesn’t remember the next 20 days.
Initially, a doctor gave him a cortisone shot and sent him home, but his sister, Deidra Dixon, grew concerned and took him to the hospital. Doctors discovered he had a brain bleed that led to a stroke.
After surgery, Jamie woke up in a wheelchair on May 4th, unable to walk. He then spent time in Chicago undergoing rehabilitation and therapy. He expressed deep gratitude for the prayers he received, saying, “I needed every prayer.”

The reality TV star said she temporarily stopped breathing while running in the first challenge of the NBC competition show.
She shared on the show Fit for TV: The Reality of The Biggest Loser that her memory of the event was fragmented. She recalled hearing a helicopter, feeling like she was floating, and then seeing her grandfather. After that, everything went dark, but then she saw light, leading her to realize she had died that day.
She explained that her organs were failing. She hadn’t known she had rhabdomyolysis, a condition where the body essentially starts to shut down.

Emilia Clarke, known for her role in Game of Thrones, revealed a harrowing health battle in a 2019 essay for The New Yorker. While filming the show, she experienced a severe headache at the gym that quickly escalated. She described collapsing and being violently ill, realizing something was seriously wrong with her brain.
After being taken to the hospital, doctors diagnosed her with a subarachnoid hemorrhage – a life-threatening stroke caused by bleeding around the brain. She had suffered an aneurysm, a rupture in an artery. Emergency surgery was performed to repair it, but the pain was excruciating. During her recovery, she struggled with aphasia, finding it difficult to speak and often muttering incoherently.
Though she recovered and was discharged after a month, a 2013 scan revealed the aneurysm had doubled in size, requiring a second surgery. This procedure initially failed, causing a massive bleed and putting her life at risk. Doctors had to perform a more invasive surgery, accessing her brain directly through her skull.
Fortunately, Emilia reports she has now made a full recovery and is at 100%.

Cori Broadus, Snoop Dogg’s daughter, recently shared how thankful she is for her family’s support. In January 2024, she suffered a stroke and immediately reached out to her loved ones, sending a text and a picture. She told TopMob News that everyone quickly came to her aid.
Cori ended up staying in the hospital longer than expected due to other health issues. While she could have gone home after the stroke, she was also dealing with lupus and kidney problems.
Now, Cori is recovering well. She says she’s doing great and is regaining her motor skills, but otherwise feels fine.

Shailene Woodley struggled with serious health issues throughout her early twenties. In a September 2024 podcast interview, she described losing her hearing, being unable to walk for more than five minutes without needing to rest for hours, and experiencing constant stomach pain. She faced a confusing array of diagnoses from different doctors. Determined to find answers, Woodley, who comes from a holistic health background and studies herbalism, sought help from both traditional doctors and alternative healers. This search for well-being lasted for ten years. The physical discomfort led to anxiety around food and eventually issues with body image and a sense of self. Thankfully, after focusing on both her physical and mental health, Woodley is now healthy and feeling good. She’s grateful to be able to say she’s fully recovered.
