Netflix’s New Sequel Movie With All-Star Cast Is Officially a Major Hit With 49 Million Hours Viewed

The 2019 film Knives Out was a huge hit, earning over $312 million worldwide on a $40 million budget. Critics loved it too, praising the clever writing and strong performances, and it even received an Oscar nomination. A sequel was quickly planned, but the COVID-19 pandemic altered the film industry. Instead of staying with Lionsgate, director Rian Johnson made a deal with Netflix to create two Knives Out sequels. The second film, Glass Onion, was also successful, making Johnson three for three with the series.

From December 8th to 14th, the movie Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery was the most popular film on Netflix globally. It received 20.2 million views and a total of 49.2 million hours of watch time, surpassing both My Secret Santa and Jay Kelly. What’s particularly noteworthy is that Wake Up Dead Man wasn’t released on Netflix until December 12th, meaning it achieved this success in only a few days.

Will the Knives Out Franchise Continue After Wake Up Dead Man?

Audiences and critics alike are loving Wake Up Dead Man, continuing the success of the previous films in the series. It currently has a 92% rating on Rotten Tomatoes (with audiences scoring it even higher at 94%), with many praising the acting – especially Josh O’Connor as Father Jud Duplencity – and the film’s thought-provoking look at faith. Plus, with another fantastic performance from Daniel Craig as Benoit Blanc, Wake Up Dead Man is a thrilling mystery that might just be the best film in the series so far.

People are still very interested in the Knives Out movies, and now that it’s a popular series on Netflix, the streaming service would likely be eager to make more. The concept works well for sequels because the detective, played by Daniel Craig, investigates different cases and a new cast of characters in each film. There isn’t an ongoing story that needs to be finished; each movie is self-contained, allowing director Rian Johnson to try new approaches and keep the series exciting. If he comes up with an idea for a fourth Knives Out film, Netflix would almost certainly approve it.

Rian Johnson recently shared updates on the future of Knives Out, explaining he has some initial ideas for the next movie, but the details are still being developed and a fourth film isn’t happening right away. He plans to direct a new, original movie and take a break from the Knives Out series. While fans might be disappointed, this is likely a good thing. Johnson has focused heavily on mystery stories with the Knives Out films and Poker Face, and he’s known for bringing fresh perspectives to different genres – from heist movies like The Brothers Bloom to science fiction like Looper. It will be exciting to see him tackle something new.

I’m still thinking about Benoit Blanc and when we’ll get another mystery! Right now, Wake Up Dead Man is totally captivating everyone on Netflix, and I think it will be for weeks to come. It might not be a huge awards contender like Jay Kelly, but the other Knives Out movies got nominated for their screenplays, so if you’re following potential Oscar winners, you should definitely watch it. Honestly, even if it doesn’t win anything, it’s just a really good movie that keeps you guessing the whole time. I have a feeling people will be talking about it for a while, and it’ll stay in Netflix’s top 10 for a good stretch.
