The new Doctor Who spinoff, The War Between the Land and the Sea, is quickly becoming a fan favorite. With over five episodes released in just three weeks, many are calling it the best Doctor Who story in years. Starring Jemma Redgrave, Russell Tovey, and Gugu Mbatha-Raw, the show centers around an environmentally-themed plot where humans must learn to coexist peacefully with a new race.
The seeds of this story were planted way back in 1972, when the classic series of Doctor Who first introduced the creatures that would become known as the Sea Devils. While The War Between the Land and the Sea isn’t flawless, it’s been an enjoyable experience for fans, boasting impressive special effects and a compelling story. Despite all this, international audiences won’t be able to watch it until 2026.
Disney+ is Responsible for Streaming this Doctor Who Spinoff Worldwide

I was so excited when I heard the BBC and Disney+ were teaming up back in October 2022! It felt like a really smart move, especially for Doctor Who. That Disney investment gave the show a real boost, letting it go head-to-head with the biggest shows on streaming. And Russell T. Davies, back as showrunner, clearly knew how to use that opportunity, launching this new spinoff as a result. The deal meant we in the UK could watch episodes on BBC One and iPlayer, while Disney+ would bring it to everyone else around the world – a win-win!
The collaboration between the BBC and Disney on Doctor Who hasn’t been as successful as hoped, with the show not attracting the expected audience or critical praise. As a result, the partnership will end after two seasons, and the current spin-off, The War Between the Land and the Sea, will be the last project made under this arrangement. While the future of Doctor Who is currently uncertain, the BBC has announced a Christmas special is planned for 2026.
The different release strategies of Disney and the BBC will have a noticeable impact on how audiences receive The War Between the Land and the Sea. The BBC plans to air it as part of its Christmas programming in December 2025, while Disney has chosen to wait until 2026. This makes sense for Disney, as December 2025 is already packed for Disney+ with the highly anticipated Season 2 of Percy Jackson, and The War Between the Land and the Sea might have gotten lost in the shuffle.
So, it looks like those of us outside of Japan are going to be waiting a bit longer for The War Between the Land and the Sea. Disney hasn’t announced a release date for the rest of the world yet, and honestly, I’m curious how they’ll roll it out. Will we get all the episodes at once, will they drop weekly, or will it be something in between? Like the Doctor always says, we’ll just have to wait and see!
