In the bustle of summer 2025, with the announcement that Denis Villeneuve will direct Bond 26, there’s been much chatter about who will be the next James Bond. However, one Hollywood actor is looking to the past as he shares an intriguing tidbit: he almost landed the role of 007 way back in the ’80s.
James Brolin, a renowned actor and filmmaker, shares that Albert ‘Cubby’ Broccoli, the ex-Bond producer, approached him about assuming the legendary role from Roger Moore when Moore decided to leave the series before the 1983 film “Octopussy.
Previously, Brolin had a conversation with Broccoli, secured an apartment in the United Kingdom, and even started collaborating with stunt performers for the character – only for Moore to change his mind in the end.
In an instance when Moore was unavailable, I seized the opportunity to drop by and interacted with everyone present. Then, I managed to secure a place to live and collaborated with the skilled stunt team. Remarkably, Cubby Broccoli himself offered me a job. Yet, without an official agreement being finalized, the Marcus Welby M.D. series came to a quick end before it could even start.
He mentioned that no contracts had been finalized yet. Upon returning to Los Angeles to gather his belongings since he expected to be away for a year, he received a call stating that Roger had chosen to do another project, which left him unavailable.
Eventually, Moore resumed his role as Bond in both Octopussy (1983) and A View to a Kill, which was released in 1985.
Brolin boasts more than 140 acting credits across television and movies, with notable performances in films such as The Amityville Horror, Capricorn One, and the original Westworld from 1973.
