In the UK, regulatory bodies remain vigilant over the development of AI technology, as major tech corporations maintain their stronghold in this domain.
The U.K.’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) announced on April 24 that they are gathering data from significant industry figures to examine whether the growing partnership between Amazon.com and AI company Anthropic could potentially suppress competition in the local market.
In September 2023, Amazon revealed plans to put $4 billion into the company Anthropic, aiming to boost their progress on creating advanced foundation models.
In March 2022, the tech giant responsible for web services announced that they had met their $4-billion investment pledge. They disclosed this by revealing a smaller share of ownership in the company and making Amazon Web Services (AWS) Anthropic’s cloud service provider.
Currently, both businesses could undergo an extensive antitrust investigation by the U.K. regulatory authorities. A week prior, the agency drew attention to the complex network of transactions and alliances among Big Tech companies in the industry.
Microsoft also announced plans for a potential collaboration with Mistral AI, a leading European AI startup, while regulatory investigations into Microsoft’s partnership with OpenAI, worth billions of dollars, are ongoing in the U.K., initiated in December 2023.
Joel Bamford, the executive director of mergers at the CMA, commented on the development:
“We will assess, objectively and impartially, whether each of these 3 deals fall within UK merger rules and, if they do, whether they have any impact on competition in the UK.”
In January, Satya Nadella, Microsoft’s CEO, described the company’s deal with OpenAI as pro-competitive. He explained that collaborations like this one create healthy competition in the AI industry, contrasting Microsoft and OpenAI with some other tech giants who have already fully integrated in this field.
Following the CMA’s discovery of a consistent trend among Big Tech firms investing in AI businesses, there is growing apprehension about potential market manipulation, leading to closer examination by the regulatory body.
The agency expressed its intention to learn from previous errors that resulted in a few powerful platforms gaining prominence.
Despite this, corporations such as Microsoft and Google have invested massive amounts of money, totaling billions of dollars, in artificial intelligence research in various nations, among which are the United Arab Emirates, Spain, Germany, and France.
