5 Funniest Jim Carrey Characters Ranked (And The Grinch Isn’t #1)

Jim Carrey rose to fame as a hilarious performer on the TV show In Living Color. This led to starring roles in blockbuster comedies, and by the end of the 90s, he was the most successful and highest-paid comedic actor in film. He starred in huge hits like Ace Ventura, Liar Liar, and Dumb and Dumber, as well as other films like The Mask and The Cable Guy. Throughout his career, Carrey has proven to be a master of physical comedy, and even though he’s worked less in recent years, he’s still considered one of the greats.

As a huge movie fan, I’ve always loved Jim Carrey’s comedic talent. So, I put together a list of what I think are his five funniest movie characters, from the role that really launched his career to some of his more recent blockbusters.

5) Dr. Ivo “Eggman” Robotnik

While Jim Carrey isn’t the huge box office star he once was, he remains a truly gifted comedic actor, and that shines through when he takes on a role. His performance as the hilariously clueless villain, Dr. Ivo Robotnik, in the Sonic the Hedgehog movies is a great example – he was so good, they expanded his part in the third film!

Jim Carrey had a unique opportunity in Sonic the Hedgehog 3: he played both the villain, Dr. Eggman, and Eggman’s grandfather. This meant he often acted alongside himself, allowing him to showcase his physical comedy skills by portraying two distinct characters interacting. Every time he was on screen, he was a standout performer.

4) The Grinch

Jim Carrey became famous for his role as the Grinch in the 2000 film directed by Ron Howard. The movie, based on the classic Dr. Seuss story and a 1966 animated special, tells the story of why the Grinch tries to ruin Christmas for the people of Whoville – they mistreated him when he was a child.

As a fan, I was amazed by Jim Carrey in this movie! Even though he was covered in so much makeup and prosthetics, he still gave a fantastic physical performance, and somehow managed to deliver those incredible facial expressions he’s famous for. Honestly, I thought it was even better than the original cartoon because it really explained why the Grinch was the way he was. It all worked because of Carrey – he was completely uninhibited and hilarious, never holding back on the physical comedy.

3) Stanley Ipkiss

I’ve always been fascinated by Jim Carrey’s range. Everyone remembers his wild, hilarious comedies from the ’90s, but he also did some really interesting, darker roles. For me, The Cable Guy and The Mask were the standouts. While The Mask was a huge hit, I actually think The Cable Guy is the stronger film – it really didn’t get the recognition it deserved. And it wasn’t just funny, either. Jim wasn’t playing for laughs in that one; he was genuinely unsettling and a little disturbing, and that’s what made the performance so compelling.

Jim Carrey’s role in The Mask let him showcase both his comedic timing and a more serious side. When his character, Stanley Ipkiss, wore the mask, he could deliver sharp, witty humor and perform the physical comedy that Carrey was known for at the time. A sequel proved that the film relied heavily on Carrey’s performance – The Mask just didn’t work without him.

2) Lloyd Christmas

Jim Carrey starred in many funny movies in the 1990s, but fans often say Dumb and Dumber is his best. In the film, he plays Lloyd Christmas, alongside Jeff Daniels as his equally clueless friend, Harry Dunne. The two embark on a road trip from Rhode Island to Colorado to return a briefcase full of cash, unaware it’s actually ransom money.

What makes this Farrelly brothers film work so well is the brilliant pairing of Carey and Daniels as incredibly clueless characters. Carrey doesn’t rely on slapstick comedy here; instead, he perfectly delivers awkward and embarrassing lines with genuine sincerity. Many consider it his strongest comedic performance to date.

1) Ace Ventura

Though Dumb and Dumber featured one of Jim Carrey’s strongest comedic performances of the 1990s, it was Ace Ventura that truly showcased his incredible physical comedy talent, earning him comparisons to Buster Keaton, a legendary performer of that kind. Ace Ventura followed a quirky pet detective who solved animal-related mysteries, all while being a passionate animal lover.

While some of the jokes in Ace Ventura haven’t aged well, it remains Jim Carrey’s most hilarious performance. The movie gave him the perfect opportunity to showcase his incredible physical comedy and uniquely expressive face. His timing was impeccable, and it was this film that truly launched him to stardom.
