Apple TV has canceled a promising show after just one season. Despite its initial potential, the show struggled with low viewership and received negative reviews – it currently has a 47% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a 50% audience score, making its cancellation unsurprising.
Starring Jason Clarke, The Last Frontier follows U.S. Marshal Frank Remnick, who oversees the vast and isolated Alaskan wilderness. When a plane carrying prisoners crashes in this remote area, releasing dangerous criminals, Remnick suspects foul play. He believes the crash wasn’t accidental, but the start of a larger, potentially catastrophic scheme. He races to uncover the truth and protect the people and land under his care.
The Last Frontier Failed To Live Up To Its Potential
The show started with a promising idea and a talented cast, including Haley Bennett, Dominic Cooper, Johnny Knoxville, and Jason Clarke. However, it didn’t live up to its potential. Both critics and viewers found the story and character connections unengaging. David Oprie from Empire Magazine noted that while the show had a strong start and finish, the middle episodes were slow and wasted the cast and the interesting premise. Chris Joyce of Movies and Munchies agreed, stating that the final episodes became predictable and unnecessarily prolonged storylines, making viewers wonder if it was worth starting the show in the first place.
The show wasn’t universally disliked, though. Graeme Blundell, writing for The Australian, drew comparisons to The Blacklist (also created by Jon Bokenkamp), praising its high production quality, efficient direction by Hargrave, and effective use of music to build atmosphere – qualities similar to The Blacklist. Viewer reactions were varied; some enjoyed the complex plot, while others found it confusing and lacking in execution.
