Platinum Trophy #4: Undertale
Date Earned: 19th August 2017
Dopamine Index:
As someone who spends a lot of time playing video games, I couldn’t stop thinking about Undertale for a long time after first playing it.
When this popular, independently developed role-playing game came out on PC in 2015, it quickly became a hit. Players loved its charming characters, heartfelt story, and creative battles.
I was curious about the hype, but since I didn’t have a computer available, I watched someone play the game on YouTube instead.
The game wasn’t released on PS4 until 2017, and that actually worked out well. By then, I’d forgotten a lot of the specifics, so I could enjoy it almost like playing it for the first time.
In retrospect, this game is truly exceptional. Its rapid rise in popularity is understandable – it features a moving story, lovable characters, and consistently surprising gameplay.
It’s also genuinely funny, a feat not many games achieve on purpose.
I recall Papyrus meticulously detailing the complicated rules of his floor tile game, then effortlessly walking right across it. I also remember the bird that helps you fly over a surprisingly short distance.
The show is full of unforgettable scenes, and I believe that’s due to its clever mix of silly humor and genuinely touching storylines.
Undertale doesn’t seem to get the appreciation it deserves today. It was so popular when it first came out that it also attracted a lot of criticism. But looking back, I’d confidently call it a modern classic.
Okay, so playing this on PS4 (or even the Vita!) is awesome because of the Trophies, naturally. But honestly, the Trophy list totally fits the vibe of Undertale – it’s just perfect.
Besides a few Trophies earned by finding items and places, many of the game’s Trophies involve a Dog Shrine. At the Shrine, you can only donate gold to unlock Trophies, and each new Trophy costs more gold than the last.
This game playfully disregards traditional achievements, almost as if it’s intentionally wasting your time if you try to collect everything. I really appreciate that rebellious spirit.
“Don’t You Have Anything Better To Do?” mocks the platinum Trophy. I mean, yes, but also no.
Cheers, Undertale.
