PlayStation Plus subscribers can currently get a PS5 game for free, no matter which plan they have (Essential, Extra, or Premium). Sony regularly offers a few games to all members each month, but opinions are mixed on December’s selection, with many feeling the games aren’t particularly exciting.
This month’s featured game is LEGO Horizon Adventures, launched last November by the team behind the Horizon series, Guerrilla Games, and Studio Gobo. Surprisingly, despite being a PlayStation-developed game, it wasn’t exclusive to PlayStation consoles – it also came out on Nintendo Switch. Although released less than a year ago, LEGO Horizon Adventures hasn’t been a big hit. Reviews were lukewarm (it has a score of 71 on Metacritic), and it’s already available for free with a PlayStation Plus subscription, suggesting it didn’t gain much traction with players.
9/10, But Not for Everyone
Interestingly, a highly-rated post on the PlayStation Plus Reddit forum this week gives the game a 9 out of 10. This is surprising given recent criticism, and the post has received almost 700 upvotes – a significant amount for that community.
A fan of the Horizon series shared their excitement about LEGO Horizon Adventures on PS Plus. They praised the game’s graphics as the best they’ve seen in a LEGO game, and really enjoyed the funny story and dialogue, even laughing out loud several times. They gave it a 9 out of 10.
Given how many people upvoted this, you’d think the comments would agree, but surprisingly, most of them don’t.
Many players find the game’s actions become very repetitive. While some enjoy the core gameplay, others criticize the dialogue as awkward and poorly written.
One commenter criticized the game, calling it the worst LEGO title yet. They felt it was too straightforward and simple, like a children’s version of Horizon Forbidden West, and lacked the fun and destructible environments of previous LEGO games made by Traveler’s Tale.
Even among those who dislike the game, there’s no consensus on why they don’t like it – the main issue seems to be the gameplay itself. While some people enjoy it, the game’s Metacritic score of 71 suggests a mixed reception, with nearly as many critics as fans. For most players, spending $40 on it might not be worthwhile, but PlayStation Plus subscribers can try it for free until January 5th as part of their subscription.
