Steam Replay 2025 is now available, letting you check out your gaming stats for the year. Interestingly, the data shows that even with big new releases in 2025 like Expedition 33, Hollow Knight Silksong, Battlefield 6, and ARC Raiders, most Steam players are still spending more time with older titles.
This naturally leads us to wonder: is this a recent development, or has it been gradually happening over time?
Steam’s Winter Sale is happening now, offering big discounts on many older games, and this is showing up in the most popular games being played. While newer 2025 releases are doing well, the top games on Steam are generally older titles that have been popular for a while.
A closer look at how Steam players are spending their time

Steam Replay 2025 lets you see how much time you spent gaming, and also how everyone on Steam is spending theirs. Interestingly, the data reveals that only 14% of all playtime was spent on games that came out in 2025.
And it doesn’t end there. Steam’s data also shows how players revisit older games, with 44% of all playtime dedicated to titles released between one and seven years ago. This is a much larger amount of time than players spend on brand new games.
Popular older games are still incredibly popular. Games that came out eight or more years ago made up 40% of all time spent playing, meaning people are playing them more than newer games.
This makes you wonder how these numbers stack up against past years. Luckily, Steam Replay lets you easily check data from previous years.
In 2024, players dedicated 15% of their time to brand new games. Recent releases, meaning games that came out not too long ago, captured 47% of playtime. Surprisingly, older games – those that are eight years or older – still accounted for a significant 37% of all time spent playing.
Looking at 2023, the difference is even more noticeable: only 9% of gaming time was dedicated to brand new games. Most time – 52% – was spent on games released recently, and a significant 38% was spent on older, classic titles.

I’ve been wondering lately how my gaming habits compare to everyone else on Steam. Do I jump at every new release, or am I more likely to replay games I already love – or even revisit old classics? It’s interesting to think about how different our gaming styles can be!
