I recently took my kids to see The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants, hoping for a fun and relaxed movie outing with popcorn and snacks. But something surprising happened just a few minutes in – a long-forgotten childhood memory suddenly resurfaced, bringing with it a wave of nostalgia for something I hadn’t remembered in almost 25 years.
It wasn’t a childhood memory of first watching SpongeBob SquarePants when it originally aired in 1999, and it wasn’t even sharing the show with my own kids. Instead, this story centers around the largest roller coaster in Texas – or at least, the tallest one currently. Let me tell you what happened.

The SpongeBob Movie Brought Back Memories Of An Old Commercial For Six Flags Over Texas’ Titan
I was completely fascinated with roller coasters as a kid. I spent countless hours playing the Roller Coaster Tycoon video game and expansions – my family’s old computer struggled to keep up! I also watched theme park shows, read books about them, and visited Six Flags Over Texas and Astroworld frequently. Seeing The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants recently reminded me of all that, and also a specific memory of a commercial for The Titan, a huge roller coaster at Six Flags Over Texas, from 2001.
The scene with SpongeBob being scared of the Titan roller coaster reminded me of my own feelings about the ride. The Titan, which was the tallest in Texas until the upcoming Tormenta Rampaging Run, used the dramatic song “O Fortuna” from Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana. Seeing SpongeBob look up at the huge coaster with that music playing instantly took me back to 2001, when I desperately wanted to experience the Titan for myself.
I can’t find the commercial online now, but I vividly remember downloading a small clip of it on my parents’ old computer after school, just before the ride first opened.

The Scene Where SpongeBob Is Too Afraid To Ride The Coaster Also Hit Me
The main plot of The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants revolves around SpongeBob trying to prove he’s brave enough to ride a huge roller coaster. When he gets scared and doesn’t want to admit it, he embarks on an adventure with his best friend Patrick and the Flying Dutchman (voiced by Mark Hamill) to a mysterious underworld. This scene, with its dramatic flair, reminded me of a time when I was a kid and too afraid to go on a ride.
It wasn’t a roller coaster, but a large water slide at Hurricane Harbor, the waterpark near Six Flags Over Texas. Seeing SpongeBob reminded me of a late summer afternoon in 1997 when I was about nine years old. I climbed to the top of that slide with my brother and dad, only to chicken out and walk down the stairs a few minutes later. I’m just relieved I didn’t have to go on some epic quest to prove my bravery afterward!
Movies often have a way of unexpectedly triggering old memories. A single scene can transport you back in time, and that’s especially true for films like The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants, which feels more like an exciting, fast-paced adventure than a simple trip down memory lane.
