A Hollywood star has gone too soon.
James Ransone, known for playing Ziggy Sobotka in the TV show The Wire, passed away on December 19th at the age of 46, according to records from the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s office, as reported by TopMob News.
TopMob News has reached out to Ransone’s manager for comment but has not heard back.
After appearing on HBO, Ransone continued to work in television, with roles in shows like Law & Order, Generation Kill, and How to Make It in America. He recently appeared on an episode of Poker Face earlier this year.
Ransone is also known for his roles in horror films like Sinister, The Black Phone, and It Chapter Two. However, he shared in 2019 that he was considering leaving acting due to growing frustration with the entertainment industry.
He told IndieWire that he seriously considered quitting the industry back in 2017. He was unhappy with some things happening at the time and even thought about going back to school to study theology.
Ransone shared that he’d written something he deeply cared about, but it didn’t gain any attention, leaving him feeling discouraged.

You know, after going through a tough time, I was thrilled to book the role of Eddie Kaspbrak in the It sequel! Working alongside incredible actors like James McAvoy, Jessica Chastain, and Bill Hader was a game-changer for my career – it really opened my eyes to what blockbuster filmmaking is all about.
He said he’d never experienced anything quite like it, describing it as a combination of divine intervention, sheer luck, and a rare, magical moment. He felt incredibly fortunate to have been involved.
Ransone is survived by his wife, Jamie McPhee, and their two children.
