After more than 40 years of watching EastEnders, we’ve discovered that characters aren’t always truly gone, even after they appear to die.
Beloved characters Pat and Barry Evans will return to The Queen Vic this Christmas in a special one-off episode. Though not a true resurrection, it’s a chance to see them again!
Pam St Clement and Shaun Williamson, returning as their former characters, will help Nigel Bates (Paul Bradley), who is living with dementia, by offering him support and advice.
As Nige’s memory and thinking skills faded, he began spending more time at the pub, where he would often have vivid memories of his friends from the past.

Honestly, I was completely stunned! When they asked me to play that glamorous, jeweled character again, it really took me by surprise. I was a bit overwhelmed, in the best way, of course.
It was surprisingly hard to get back into the costume and makeup. I expected it to be easier, but I realize playing this character has changed me – I’ve moved past the point where I fully identified with her.

I thought I understood her style – her clothes, makeup, everything – but it’s surprising that the public doesn’t seem to, because it feels so new and current.
Williamson admitted it felt strange being back after 22 years, despite enjoying it. A lot had changed in that time, which he expected.
Things have changed, and that’s natural. It’s not the same as it used to be, and it shouldn’t be – everything evolves and moves forward.

He did admit, though, that it was surprisingly easy to get back into character as Barry – no offense intended!
It felt natural to play Barry again. I’d already portrayed him both in EastEnders and on Ricky Gervais’ show, Extras.
“I loved seeing the people that I worked with, and maybe I’ve worked with since,” St Clement added.
I was surprised to find such a strong sense of community on a TV show. It’s similar to theatre, where you become close to people because you spend so much time together.

When you’re working on something like a theater production, you’re often away from your usual surroundings. It’s wonderful to be part of a team that comes together to create something special.
It’s highly organized and surprisingly effective. This success is due to everyone working together towards a common goal.

Finally, Williamson added some exciting news: Nicola Duffett, who originally played Debbie, Nigel’s first wife, will be back as well.
It was wonderful reconnecting with so many people I haven’t seen in a while. I especially enjoyed seeing Paul, Pam, and Nicola, who played Debbie.
It’s wonderful to reconnect with everyone. Losing Tony Caunter, who played Roy, really makes you realize how quickly time passes, and it’s lovely to see familiar faces.
