I remember watching Cartoon Network 25 years ago today, and it was the start of something really special – a show that would become a cornerstone of what we now know as Adult Swim, even before Adult Swim officially existed! It’s funny to think that Adult Swim is now arguably more popular than Cartoon Network itself, but back then, it was just an experiment. Cartoon Network was looking for ways to fill its late-night slots and saw how popular adult animation was becoming, so they started creating their own original shows to try and capture that audience.
Back in 2000, Williams Street created a few original shows that would become the foundation for Adult Swim’s late-night programming. One of the most memorable of these was Sealab 2021, which first aired on December 21st. When Adult Swim officially launched the following year, Sealab 2021 was a key part of its initial lineup, helping to define the network’s unique style.
Sealab 2021 Premiered 25 Years Ago Today

I definitely remember when Adult Swim first started, around 25 years ago. They announced it with these funny commercials telling kids to leave the pool – that’s actually how they came up with the name! It really felt like something new and different was coming on TV. I recall it being spearheaded by Mike Lazzo, who was in charge of programming at Cartoon Network at the time. They started making original shows through their Williams Street production company, but they kept the budgets really low to fill that late-night slot.
The initial experiment proved highly successful with Space Ghost Coast to Coast, a show that uniquely combined a classic Hanna-Barbera superhero with live-action guests. Characters were taken directly from their original designs and given simple animation, creating a very funny effect. This approach was particularly evident in Sealab 2021, which premiered unexpectedly on December 21st alongside other new hits like Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law, Aqua Teen Hunger Force, and The Brak Show. While inspired by the original Sealab 2020, Sealab 2021 offered a completely reimagined experience for viewers.
Similar to how Space Ghost Coast to Coast did before it, Sealab 2021 cleverly reused animation from its original source material but completely reinvented the characters. The show was both a parody of the 1970s series it was based on, and a wonderfully chaotic experience. Each ten-minute episode featured bizarre and unpredictable events, often culminating in the destruction of the entire base. Characters frequently died, only to reappear in the next episode, and the show’s most memorable character, Captain Murphy (voiced by the late Harry Goz), was often driven to madness by his prolonged time underwater.
Why Sealab 2021 Is Important 25 Years Later
Sealab 2021 aired for four seasons on Adult Swim and played a key role in establishing the network’s reputation for strange and original adult animation. When popular shows like Family Guy and Futurama later found homes on Adult Swim, it helped the network grow into the powerhouse it is today within Cartoon Network. This success has enabled Adult Swim to keep introducing new and unconventional shows from a variety of creators.
The real legacy of Sealab 2021 lies in its impact on animation. Created by Adam Reed and Matt Thompson – the minds behind hits like Frisky Dingo and Archer – the show pioneered a unique style. Years later, Sealab 2021 even made a comeback through a fun crossover episode with Archer, titled “Sea Tunt,” which reintroduced a delightfully chaotic Captain Murphy to a new generation.
Premiering before Adult Swim was officially launched, Sealab 2021 was a pioneering show that helped establish the network’s unique style. Twenty-five years later, its experimental spirit continues to influence each new, quirky series Adult Swim produces. The show’s original energy still feels right for the network, even as Adult Swim has become a well-known part of Cartoon Network.
