Sidney Sweeney had a packed year, and her final film of 2025 is The Housemaid, where she plays the main character, Millie. The film uses glasses as a symbol of hidden truths. Millie takes a live-in job as a housemaid and nanny for the wealthy couple Andrew (Brandon Sklenar), who designed their home, and Nina (Amanda Seyfried), and their spoiled daughter, Cece (Indiana Elle).
Millie starts her new job, but on her first day, she finds the house a mess – dishes broken in the kitchen and Nina hysterically blaming the housekeeper. This chaotic scene feels like a direct reference to Meghan Markle watching the show’s ratings. However, Nina quickly composes herself and, along with her husband, questions Millie with a startling line: ‘What sort of monsters are we?’ – a comment that likely stems from a confidentiality agreement broken by a previous employee in their California home.
The movie uses Millie’s journal entries, narrated throughout, and flashbacks to reveal what happened. Amanda Seyfried delivers powerful, emotional speeches, while Sydney Sweeney continues to play the charming and alluring character she’s known for. Director Paul Feig, who has a knack for films with strong female leads, skillfully brings it all together.
This is the fourth film of the year for Sweeney, following disappointing releases: the star-studded ‘Eden’ failed to gain traction (and may not even come to the UK), ‘Echo Valley’ went straight to streaming, and ‘Christy’, which was expected to be an awards contender, also flopped. ‘The Housemaid’ is a much more enjoyable and wild ride, and should give her a positive ending to what has been a challenging year.
