HBO Max’s New True Crime Release Is An Instant Streaming Hit

HBO Max is known for producing high-quality drama, and their latest true crime series is already proving popular. HBO boasts a strong catalog of shows, including beloved classics like The Sopranos and Oz, as well as recent hits such as The White Lotus and Welcome to Derry. New show announcements from HBO often generate a lot of buzz, leading to big initial viewership numbers – especially if the first episode delivers. Given the popularity of the true crime genre, this new series is poised to be another success for HBO Max.

According to FlixPatrol, the new true crime series, The Secrets We Bury, is now the most-watched title on HBO Max, surpassing even popular holiday movies to reach the number one spot.

The Secrets We Bury Is the Most-Watched Movie on HBO Max

The new Netflix documentary, The Secrets We Bury, released on December 18th, quickly became a hit with viewers. It tells the story of Mike Carroll’s search for his missing father, George Carroll, who disappeared decades ago. As Mike investigates, he uncovers a troubling family mystery that could shatter everything he thought he knew.

The true-crime documentary, directed by Patricia E. Gillespie, explores long-held secrets surrounding a decades-old disappearance. Jean Kennedy, a woman in her 70s, admits to keeping these secrets for years. The film centers on the case of George Carroll, a father of four who vanished in 1961, and his son’s quest to uncover the truth. Jean is revealed to be the son’s aunt, and her revelations transform a family mystery into a disturbing story of past events.

The movie hasn’t been out long, so there aren’t many reviews from critics or audience members yet, which is affecting its Rotten Tomatoes score. However, since it’s currently the most popular movie on HBO Max, that’s likely to change soon. The only review available so far, from Culture Mix Online, describes the documentary as ‘slow paced’ but ‘fascinating,’ highlighting how regular people uncovered more information than the police. While the movie reveals what happened to George, it doesn’t explain how or why.

HBO’s current top 10 movies include a variety of titles. After The Secrets We Bury, there’s a string of holiday favorites: Christmas with the Kranks, Elf, and The Polar Express. Next up are two films by Rob Reiner, This is Spinal Tap and Spinal Tap II: The End Continues. Another Christmas movie, National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, is followed by Flight Risk, The Conjuring: Last Rites, and Music Box: Counting Crows: Have You Seen Me Lately?

The most popular show on streaming right now is IT: Welcome to Derry, as many expected. Following that is Heated Rivalry, and then the beloved classic Mad Men, which you can currently watch on HBO Max.
