2024 was an incredible year for Superman fans! The release of James Gunn’s Superman movie in the summer was a huge hit, but the excitement didn’t stop there. Throughout the year, Superman comics delivered a fantastic range of stories. Titles like Superman Unlimited explored new powers and everyday adventures with his friends, while the return of classic, Silver Age-style storytelling in Supergirl (2025) was a blast. Overall, it’s been a truly amazing time to be a Superman comic book enthusiast.
With the year ending, we’re taking a look back at five of the best Superman comics released this year and ranking them. There was a lot of fantastic competition – including noteworthy titles like Superman: The Kryptonite Spectrum and the continuing Batman/Superman: World’s Finest – but these five really stood out. They raised the bar for Superman comics this year, and some are truly exceptional. Let’s get started!
5) DC K.O.

DC’s latest event promises to be one of their biggest in years. After a year of anticipation, the villain Darkseid is back, more powerful than ever, and determined to finally defeat his foes. Though the story features many of DC’s popular heroes and villains, it primarily focuses on Superman. With the entire universe at stake, Superman is grappling with a difficult choice: whether to compromise his values to save everyone. The comic explores Superman’s inner struggles, and while it’s been a compelling read so far, the story is still unfolding, preventing a definitive ranking at this time.
4) Superman (2023)

Joshua Williamson’s work on Superman has dramatically changed things for the character, but its biggest success has been laying the groundwork for DC K.O. and the return of Darkseid. The story introduced the villainous Legion and brought back the popular Superboy-Prime, now fighting alongside the heroes. This run consistently refreshes classic Superman concepts with a lot of creative energy. The way Darkseid’s Legion was introduced was brilliantly done, building excitement for what’s to come, and this series will be remembered for taking big risks that really paid off.
3) Action Comics

Mark Waid, a highly acclaimed writer, recently revisited Action Comics to bring back a key element of Superman’s history that hasn’t been explored for years: Clark Kent’s time as Superboy. While Clark’s early hero days haven’t been a focus in ongoing comics for a long time, Waid offers a fresh, modern take on Superman’s beginnings. This series is both a thrilling adventure and a thoughtful look at how a hero develops. What makes it truly special is Waid’s fantastic portrayal of Clark, and his understanding that Superman’s core strength lies in his unwavering kindness and commitment to doing what’s right. Ultimately, this story makes a strong case for more Superboy stories – and soon!
2) Superman: The Last Days of Lex Luthor

It’s unusual to include a series that began in 2023, but The Last Days of Lex Luthor definitely deserves a spot on this list. It provided a fitting conclusion to the complex relationship between Lex and Superman. The story followed Superman’s efforts to heal Lex from a fatal illness, and Lex’s gradual realization of Superman’s heroism. When it seemed Lex’s only fate was death, Superman took a huge risk, sharing his own powers as a sign of ultimate trust. Ultimately, Lex gave his life to save the one person he considered a friend. It was a truly moving and excellent final story for both characters.
1) Absolute Superman

The Absolute series offers a fresh take on DC’s most iconic heroes, and Absolute Superman truly showcases this. It’s a complete reimagining of Superman, grounding him in his origins as a protector of those in need while also highlighting his immense power and symbolic importance. This version of Superman is a vulnerable character searching for belonging after experiencing great loss, and he finds himself in a world filled with conflict and people who only want to exploit his abilities. No one sees him as an individual, just a source of power. Throughout the story, Superman must rediscover hope and, in doing so, inspire hope in others.
This Superman comic is truly unique, boldly reaffirming the hero’s core mission: to help the vulnerable, challenge injustice, and champion the value of every life. It beautifully revisits Superman’s origins, staying true to his ideals while feeling fresh and innovative. It’s a compelling story of a young man becoming the hero he’s meant to be, bringing hope to even the darkest situations – a classic Superman tale, and this comic executes it exceptionally well.
