December has been a great month for new shows on Netflix, and I’m really excited that all seven seasons of a fantastic crime drama starring a Marvel actor are now available! We’ve already gotten some awesome additions like the sequel to Troll, Troll 2, plus Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery and Season 2 of Anne Rice’s Mayfair Witches. If you’re looking for something new to binge-watch, I definitely recommend checking out this intense crime show – it’s a real winner!
J.K. Simmons, best known for playing J. Jonah Jameson in the Spider-Man movies and later in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, also starred in the TNT series The Closer. All seven seasons—109 episodes in total—of The Closer became available on Netflix on December 22nd, marking its first time streaming on the platform in the U.S. The show, which originally ran on TNT from 2005 to 2012, followed Kyra Sedgwick as Brenda Leigh Johnson, a police detective who moved to Los Angeles and led a team solving difficult and highly publicized murder cases.
The Closer Is One of the Best Crime Dramas of All Time
As a huge crime drama fan, I was so thrilled to see The Closer hit Netflix! It’s seriously one of the best in the genre, consistently keeping you on the edge of your seat. What really set it apart for me was how it delved into the minds of the detectives and focused on the way they solved cases – lots of smart conversations and psychological insights. But it wasn’t just about the crimes; the show did an amazing job of balancing that with the personal lives of the characters. You really got to know Brenda Leigh Johnson, played brilliantly by Kyra Sedgwick (and rightfully winning a Golden Globe!), as a fully-rounded person with her own struggles and ambitions. And honestly, every character felt that well-developed – it made the show so much more engaging!
After the popularity of The Closer, a spin-off series called Major Crime was created. It premiered in 2012 and followed Sharon Raydor, played by McDonnell, as she led a special LAPD unit investigating high-profile and sensitive cases. Although the show ran for six seasons, it isn’t currently available on Netflix. However, fans can still find it to rent or purchase online.
What’s New on Netflix?
Netflix added a bunch of exciting new shows and movies this month! For TV fans, that includes the second season of Anne Rice’s Mayfair Witches, all seven seasons of The West Wing, and fresh episodes of the popular animated series The Amazing Digital Circus. They also have both seasons of the Stephen King series Castle Rock. If you’re in the mood for a movie, Netflix has added classics like Pulp Fiction, Forrest Gump, Cast Away, and The Talented Mr. Ripley.
