Most fans know and love Back to the Future as a classic science fiction film, but it almost turned out very differently. When production started, Eric Stoltz was originally cast as Marty McFly, not Michael J. Fox. After filming for over a month with Stoltz, the filmmakers decided he wasn’t the right fit for the role and replaced him with Fox, ultimately changing movie history.
Many movie fans are unaware that when Michael J. Fox replaced Eric Stoltz, another actor was also swapped during the making of the film. Melora Hardin, originally cast as Marty McFly’s girlfriend Jennifer, was deemed too tall for Fox – she’s 5’5” compared to his 5’4”. This height difference wasn’t a problem when she acted with the 6-foot-tall Stoltz. Hardin recently spoke out about being replaced in the movie.
Original Back to the Future Star Melora Hardin Breaks Silence on Being Recast
Though many now recognize her as Jan Levinson, Steve Carell’s character on The Office, actress Melora Hardin still remembers how upsetting it was to be fired from Back to the Future. She recently told Entertainment Weekly it was a “huge disappointment,” but that with time and a successful career, she’s gained a new perspective on the experience.
Hardin recalled being just 17 and breaking down in tears. He said there were many difficult moments he remembered, projects that never came to fruition. He emphasized that success requires a lot of failure, something people often don’t understand when they only see the finished product. He believes it’s crucial to be comfortable with taking risks and not letting failure define you.
Claudia Wells originally played Jennifer in Back to the Future, but Elisabeth Shue took over the role for the second and third movies.
The roles of Jennifer and Marty weren’t the only cast changes in the Back to the Future series. Perhaps the most well-known example is the recasting of George McFly in Back to the Future Part II. Crispin Glover was replaced by Jeffrey Weissman, and filmmakers went to great lengths to disguise Weissman with prosthetics and even filmed him upside down, hoping audiences wouldn’t notice the switch. This decision led to a lawsuit from Glover and ultimately changed the rules within the Screen Actors Guild to prevent similar situations from happening again. Essentially, Back to the Future had a significant impact on Hollywood, especially in how things are done behind the scenes.
