How Controversy Only Made Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Stronger

As a seasoned observer of public figures, I find it truly inspiring to witness the relentless pursuit of positive change that Harry and Meghan are committed to. Their recent tour of Nigeria is a testament to their dedication, as they recognize the importance of direct interaction in fostering understanding and bringing about meaningful solutions.

Initially, their visit to Nigeria appeared to be a typical royal excursion for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.

1. During their visit in May, local officials lavished them with the highest level of special treatment. She donned a variety of outfits, each one scrutinized closely for meaning. Moreover, there was an article paying tribute to Princess Diana when Meghan opted for an olive-green blazer paired with all-white attire on her return journey home.

Instead, it’s important to note that Harry and Meghan were not engaged in royal duties when they chose to step back in 2020. This move effectively severed ties with the institution, and later, more dramatically, with Harry’s family to different extents. However, Harry has expressed that he never intended for this to happen and continues to hope for reconciliation.

It’s unlikely that many would describe the experiences Harry and Meghan have encountered as adversity. Despite their challenges, they remain wealthy, popular, and retain their titles as Duke and Duchess of Sussex. Their sons, Archie (age 5) and Lilibet (age 3), may not have held titles at birth, but now, being the grandchildren of the ruling monarch, they hold the prestigious positions of a prince and princess.

For six years now, King Charles III has taken the role of walking Meghan down the aisle instead of her father who was unable to attend. Despite establishing themselves as Californian residents, Meghan and Harry continue to face harsh criticism from certain groups, regardless of their actions.

Almost as if they’d never left England.

On occasions, it seems as if you’ve stepped into an alternate reality or tumbled down a rabbit hole, only to return, when witnessing the ongoing debates about the couple. Certain U.K. media outlets, along with certain individuals who contribute to the more malicious trends on social media platforms, continue their harsh criticism of Harry and Meghan for revealing family secrets in interviews, their 2022 Netflix docuseries, and his 2023 book “Spare.”

And there’s another joint sit-down for CBS This Morning Aug. 4…

Simultaneously, this pair garners a significant number of supporters, some even hidden among supportive hashtags. These individuals are swift to criticize the perceived mistakes of the royal family while defending those who managed to escape the relentless barrage.

In the Netflix series, I mused, “Life feels akin to being a character in a daytime drama, where everyone else seems to watch me as if I’m mere entertainment.” This experience left me feeling estranged from my family, which was oddly intriguing given their actions often revolved around appearances rather than emotions. To an outsider, they appeared cold, but the chill ran even deeper—it felt cold too.

When Spare was released, he shared with ABC News’ Michael Strahan that as someone with a large extended family, there eventually comes a time when the family you create for yourself becomes more important than the one you were born into. He elaborated that making the decision to separate was difficult, but it was his thought process and the journey he undertook.

In truth, since Meghan’s November 2020 op-ed piece in the New York Times disclosing a prior miscarriage, followed by their revealing interview with Oprah Winfrey in 2021 and the media attention surrounding Harry’s book early in 2023, they have been rather private about their personal life.

Meghan explained to Oprah, “I didn’t intend to share anything surprising, but I’m simply recounting the events as they occurred, and it’s all taken quite a toll on me.”

However, just like they’ve needed to be since it became public that Meghan was Harry’s girlfriend towards the end of 2016, the pair have faced all the commotion side by side, and their relationship has grown even stronger as a result of moving countries and welcoming two children into their family.

Harry shared with Oprah that their family consists of the four of them, plus their two pets. He expressed that it’s wonderful having this close-knit group.

They haven’t let constant questioning dampen their determination to bring about change and share their good luck; instead, the varied responses to their actions have persisted.

Harry emphasized to People during their three-day trip to Nigeria that it’s crucial for us to interact face-to-face with people, as this helps advance our causes, gain insights, and foster positive change. He was previously in London celebrating the 10th anniversary of the Invictus Games. Harry mentioned that while remote work has its limits, he is excited about future travels because the work we do is significant.

Meghan described the journey as both remarkably unique and precious, stating it was the most treasured keepsake – all the cherished moments we’ve created together.

Acknowledging the mental health summit on May 10, sponsored by GEANCO Foundation and held at Lightway Academy in Abuja, which she attended and interacted with numerous students, she expressed seeing her own self reflected in those children.

“Meghan stated that it’s similar to what we want for our own kids – providing them with hope and enthusiasm about their future prospects.”

Regarding herself and Harry, she remarked, “Things are going wonderfully for us. It’s a joy to witness our family expanding and changing. Needless to say, I’m content. We’re truly content with our lives.”

In the chill of February, I found myself in Whistler, British Columbia, on a mission to explore the venue for the 2025 Invictus Games. This extraordinary event brings together military veterans and active service members, all of whom were wounded while defending their nations. During my visit, I couldn’t help but reflect on the incredible strength and resilience of families who rise above challenges when a loved one is afflicted by illness or injury.

In various families I encounter daily, I consistently witness the resilience of family bonds, Harry shared with Good Morning America. In fact, any health issue or ailment seems to draw families closer, and this recurring observation brings me great joy.

It wasn’t by chance, as he had recently returned from a visit to the U.K. where he saw his father, when Charles announced on February 5th that he had been diagnosed with cancer.

Speaking for myself, as soon as the opportunity presented itself, I hopped on a flight to be with him. Let me tell you, my affection for my family knows no bounds. Being able to board a plane, visit him, and share precious moments together – I’m truly thankful for that experience.

Despite being in London during the Invictus anniversary, Harry unfortunately did not manage to meet the king. According to a representative for Harry, this was because the King’s schedule was packed, but Harry understood his father’s numerous commitments and other pressing matters, expressing hope that they would catch up soon.

At his residence in Montecito, California, Harry’s children were truly remarkable, as Meghan mentioned during their interview on CBS Sunday Morning that aired on August 4 (coincidentally, also the Duchess of Sussex’s 43rd birthday). “As parents, all you really desire is to shield them,” she added.
