Hilary Duff’s Husband Matthew Koma Reveals True Story of How They Met

Matthew Koma instantly knew Hilary Duff was the one.

Recently, on their sixth anniversary – December 21st – the singer from the Winnetka Bowling League shared a sweet memory. He posted a screenshot of the very first calendar invite from when he and his wife, who you might recognize from Lizzie McGuire, first met. It’s those little reminders of how it all began that really make a relationship special, don’t you think?

Matthew shared a screenshot on Instagram from a meeting he had with Hilary Duff on January 21, 2015, at a Los Angeles coffee shop. He posted it on December 21st and jokingly wrote, “The meeting went well!” after tagging her.

The 38-year-old also showed a screenshot of an email he sent to a friend earlier that day. When asked if Hilary was alright, he jokingly replied, “I wanna get married.”

He shared a sweet message about his wife, reminiscing about how people initially questioned their relationship. They have three children together: Banks, age 7; Mae, age 4; and Townes, who is 19 months old.

He celebrated six years of marriage with a post on Instagram Stories, playfully acknowledging that many doubted their relationship would last. He specifically called out one commenter on Just Jared who predicted their failure, but happily declared they were proving everyone wrong.

Matthew then compared being married to the “Mature” singer to “eating Taco Bell in the late 9O’s.”

He admitted you never quite know what to expect, but it’s generally the same good stuff, and the enjoyment always beats any minor stomach upset. He also playfully added that they always look great and he gets thrilled whenever someone mentions getting a Meximelt.

Matthew finished his message to Hilary by telling her he loved her and briefly describing what their kids were up to – apparently, they were arguing, and Mae had just broken one of her dolls.

Hilary was flattered by the surprising comparison, reposting it to her Instagram Stories with the caption, “It’s actually really cool to be compared to Taco Bell. He always delivers!”

Hilary, who is also a mother to 13-year-old Luca with her ex-husband Mike Comrie, has often talked about how well she and Matthew get along and support each other.

She explained to People magazine in 2021 that he’s great at seeing the overall situation, while she tends to focus on the immediate details. He can step back and look at things from a broader perspective, whereas she is more focused on the present moment.

Oh my gosh, you won’t BELIEVE it! Apparently, they started casually dating after they first met, and it was this whole on-again, off-again thing for a while. But then, thankfully, they realized they were meant to be and decided to make it official – forever! I knew it all along, they’re just perfect together!

She explained that they realized they were meant to be together after repeatedly attempting and failing to separate. It just never worked when they tried to live apart.

By October 2017, Matt and his girlfriend were back together, and he attended her 30th birthday party. A source told TopMob News that they had started seeing each other again after Matt returned from tour. The tour had been a major factor in their initial breakup, but now they were reconnecting. She later shared on The Talk that this was actually their third attempt at a relationship, and she jokingly said, “Third time’s a charm!”

Hilary Duff and Matthew Koma announced they were expecting a baby girl in June 2018. Koma shared the happy news on social media, writing, “We’re having a baby girl! She’s going to be just as beautiful and sweet as her mom, @hilaryduff. A new adventure begins!”

In October 2018, the couple welcomed their daughter, Banks Violet Bair, to the family. The actress announced the happy news online, sharing that the new arrival had “fully stolen our hearts” and was born at home on a Thursday afternoon, describing her as “absolute magic.”

Almost two years after they first appeared together in public, Koma proposed to the actress.

Duff and Koma said “I do” in Dec. 2019, surrounded by their loved ones! 

Matthew celebrated his first wedding anniversary with Hilary by sharing a sweet Instagram post. He thanked her for everything she did during the pandemic, praising her strength and resilience.
