Kansas City Chiefs Leaving Missouri After More Than 60 Years

The Kansas City Chiefs have moved their goal line to a new state.

For over sixty years, the NFL team—including stars like Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce, and Jaylen Watson—has played its home games at Arrowhead Stadium in Missouri. Now, they will be relocating and playing their home games in Kansas.

The team announced on Instagram on December 22nd that they’ve reached an agreement with the State of Kansas to continue playing Chiefs football games starting with the 2031 NFL season. They plan to build a new, modern domed stadium and surrounding entertainment district in Wyandotte County over the next several years.

The team’s training facility, located near Arrowhead Stadium, will also be moving to a new, large development in Olathe, Kansas – a suburb about 20 miles southwest of their current location. This entire move is expected to generate at least $4 billion in development.

The Chiefs stated that the positive impact on the whole area would be huge. A stadium of this quality would make Kansas City a strong contender to host major events like the Super Bowl and the Final Four.

This landmark decision will help the team achieve even greater things, but they’ll always be grateful to their fans for the incredible support during their home games.

The organization shared that Arrowhead Stadium brings back cherished family memories and incredible experiences. However, they emphasized that the true heart of a Chiefs game day isn’t the stadium itself, but the fans. It’s the energy and passion of the people – not the seats, the building, or even the tailgating – that make the games so special.

This announcement follows more than a year of discussions between the Chiefs and the governments of Missouri and Kansas regarding the team’s future stadium. Last June, Kansas lawmakers approved a plan using STAR bonds – a funding mechanism that could cover up to 70% of the stadium’s cost if the Chiefs agreed to the project, as reported by Fox 4. The proposal gained further momentum this month, receiving approval from the states’ Legislative Coordinating Council on December 22nd.

The Chiefs have moved stadiums before. They previously played at Municipal Stadium from 1963 to 1971, and then moved to Arrowhead Stadium, where they’ve become a historic franchise, in 1972.

As the Kansas City Chiefs prepare to move stadiums, their quarterback Patrick Mahomes is facing a personal challenge. He recently suffered a torn ACL during a game against the Los Angeles Chargers on December 14th, ending his ninth season early. Mahomes and his wife, Brittany Mahomes, share three young children: Sterling, 4, Bronze, 3, and Golden, who is 11 months old.

The player, age 30, expressed disappointment on X after the game, saying he wasn’t sure why things turned out this way and admitting it was painful. He added that all he could do now was have faith and keep working hard every day.

He expressed his gratitude to the Chiefs fans for their constant support and for all the well wishes and prayers he’d received, promising to return even stronger.
