What you need to know

  • OpenAI co-founder Greg Brockman announced that he’ll be on sabbatical leave through the end of the year to “relax.”
  • Researcher John Schulman also announced his departure from the AI firm to join Anthropic to focus on AI alignment.
  • The drastic changes at the firm take shape as concerned parties mount more pressure on its safety processes.

As a seasoned analyst with decades of experience in the tech industry, I’ve witnessed the rise and fall of many promising startups, but the current situation at OpenAI is particularly concerning. The exodus of key personnel like Greg Brockman and John Schulman, who were instrumental in shaping the company’s vision and direction, raises serious questions about the future of this AI pioneer.

“The employees of OpenAI, led by those from ChatGPT’s team, have collectively emphasized that the company relies heavily on its people. However, it’s worth noting that the organization has recently experienced departures within its safety and super alignment team over the past few months. Jan Leike, a former head of super alignment at OpenAI, has openly expressed disagreements with the company’s management regarding their decision-making processes, stating that there seems to be a focus on creating attractive products instead of prioritizing safety concerns.”

It appears that the team at OpenAI has undergone some significant changes lately. According to a report by The Information, co-founder Greg Brockman is taking an extended break until the end of the year, while researcher John Schulman is shifting to work with OpenAI’s competitor, Anthropic.

For the first time in nine years since helping establish OpenAI, I’m stepping back to unwind and recharge my batteries, with plans to return by the end of this year. Our work on building a safe artificial general intelligence (AGI) is far from over; it remains an ongoing mission.

On Monday, Schulman shared his decision to leave OpenAI, which was previously known as Twitter, to devote more time to AI alignment work at Anthropic. He clarified that the shift wasn’t due to a lack of support for alignment research at OpenAI but rather because he wanted to focus on this critical area at Anthropic where he feels his contributions will have a greater impact. According to the researcher, the leaders at OpenAI have always been dedicated to investing in alignment research.

Today, I conveyed the following message to my OpenAI coworkers: After much thought, I have opted to part ways with OpenAI. This decision arises from a strong desire to delve deeper into AI alignment and reengage in hands-on technical work. I’ve chosen to embark on a fresh professional journey as of August 6, 2024.

The original creators of ChatGPT, OpenAI, have seen significant changes in their team composition since its inception, as many founding members have departed the company without much fanfare. Notably, Ilya Sutskever, a former Chief Scientist at OpenAI, chose to step down to devote his time to a personally significant endeavor. Later on, Sutskever established a new firm that competes with OpenAI and focuses primarily on developing ‘safe artificial superintelligence.’

It appears that Brockman and Schulman have entered the mix, leaving CEO Sam Altman, Greg Brockman, and Wojciech Zaremba (the head of language and code generation) as the last members of the initial founding group at OpenAI.

Is the pressure catching up to key OpenAI players?

For the past several months, OpenAI has faced criticism due to allegations such as focusing on flashy projects like Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) at the expense of safety protocols, and potentially releasing GPT-4 too early.

Lately, Elon Musk, a billionaire, has initiated a fresh lawsuit against Sam Altman and OpenAI, alleging breach of their founding principles and suspected involvement in illicit activities. Previously, he had filed a similar lawsuit but unexpectedly withdrew it without any long-term implications. Musk asserts that OpenAI exploited a supposed humanitarian cause to attract investment for its technological progression.

The suit alleges that Altman and Brockman influenced Elon Musk into co-founding the company by assuring him of a more ethical and transparent path compared to profit-driven tech giants. Musk asserts that the recent AI models from OpenAI represent Artificial General Intelligence, but the creators of ChatGPT are postponing its announcement for financial advantage.
