As a die-hard fan of Brandon Sanderson’s works since I discovered “Mistborn” back in 2008, this news has sent me reeling with excitement! The prospect of delving deeper into the intricate worlds of Sanderson’s Cosmere through tabletop role-playing games is almost too good to be true.
In 2026, expect the release of the “Mistborn RPG,” an exciting development announced exclusively by ComicBook! Earlier today, Brotherwise Games unveiled that the “Stormlight RPG” marks the beginning of a new “Cosmere RPG” system based on Brandon Sanderson’s worlds. Following “Stormlight RPG,” the second series of games to be developed are the “Mistborn RPG.” This game will delve into both the first and second era of the book series, with future plans to explore the third era (characterized by a science-fiction theme) once Sanderson extends his writing into that phase.
At GenCon, representatives from ComicBook had a chat with Johnny O’Neal, the creative director, and Meric Moir, the writer, of the Cosmere RPG. They shared some initial details about the upcoming game, The Mistborn RPG. This new role-playing game will build upon the classes introduced in the Cosmere RPG and incorporate the Investiture system to emulate the magic system found in the Mistborn book series, as presented in both the first and second eras. According to O’Neal, players can choose to embody a complete Mistborn, a complete Feruchemist, a Misting, or a character following a purely heroic path in Era 2. The Twinborn, who possess one Allomantic power and one Feruchemical power, offer an ideal balance of abilities in an RPG setting, along with additional talents like being an investigator or similar roles, making for a truly exciting experience.
In the Mistborn RPG, O’Neil has confirmed that each of the sixteen metals will be included and play a role, although some may offer more specialized abilities or have fewer options. This means you can utilize these metals through Allomancy or Feruchemy. The paths for Mistborn and Twinborn characters are similar, but those with Misting abilities in a specific metal will be highly specialized. Additionally, some of the metals might only have a limited talent tree, but it will still contain a significant amount of unique capabilities.
As a Mistborn RPG enthusiast, one intriguing aspect of this game is how it handles the interaction between different magic systems. During our chat, Moir and O’Neal shared insights on how these systems might intertwine. In this universe, Bronze – a significant element in the Mistborn system – can uncover Allomantic abilities on Scadrial, the world of Mistborn. Interestingly, as O’Neal mentioned, in other realms like Roshar, you could potentially detect and utilize various forms of Investiture. Although Bronze might not be the first power I’d pick for use on Scadriel, delving deeper into the Cosmere reveals some truly potent abilities.
Moir emphasized that aluminum, often considered insignificant or worthless in the world of Scadrial as depicted in the “Mistborn” books, might prove incredibly beneficial elsewhere, as it has the ability to eliminate Investiture, effectively neutralizing any magical influences on those planets.
Moreover, the Mistborn Role-Playing Game (RPG) includes fresh specialties and character archetypes inspired by series characters. O’Neal hinted that Mastermind, akin to characters like Kelsier and Steris, is one of the new specialties, while Grifter, representing shady figures, is another. Since January, the designers of the Cosmere RPG have been playtesting Mistborn content, allowing them to develop the game’s rules over several months. Preliminary content will be available on Demiplane and DriveThruRPG for early access by players and Kickstarter backers.
Moir, who contributed to the “Mistborn World Guide,” noted that the novels also provide additional insights into less explored aspects of the world. In his words, “We have numerous discussions with Brandon about Terris and Kandra, gathering extra details for them beyond what’s presented in the books.” Such information is highly sought after by readers, along with details concerning Koloss and Koloss-Blooded characters. These are intricate details that will be included in the World Guide, and they are all officially recognized and approved by Dragonsteel Entertainment.
When queried about a sneak peek of future developments, Moir highlighted the world-construction he was engaged in. “I’m creating numerous nations, cultures, and focal points,” Moir explained. “We delved deeply into Terris during Era 1, as we receive details from Sazed and Tindwyl, but it’s quite sketchy. So we need to ask [Dragonsteel] what this culture resembles, which is exciting. And in Era 2, during the planning stages currently, we plan to showcase at least three major cities: Elendel, Bilming, and New Seran. These are the cities that we encounter in Books 1 and 2 for Elendel, then New Seran in Book 3, and finally Bilming in Book 4. We’re making them unique and intriguing. It’s quite fascinating.”
