Young Sherlock Show Twists Holmes & Moriarty’s Relationship

A new Sherlock Holmes series is coming to Prime Video, and it’s already shaken things up by changing the dynamic between Holmes and his greatest enemy, James Moriarty. Sherlock Holmes remains incredibly popular, and recent shows like the BBC’s Sherlock and Elementary have only grown his devoted following.

I’ve always loved Sherlock Holmes, and it’s amazing how many different takes there are on the characters! Because the rights to Holmes are available, lots of artists get to put their own spin on things. One of my favorites is the Young Sherlock series by Andrew Lane, which shows what Holmes was like as a teenager in the 1860s and 70s. And now, I’m so excited to see those books brought to life as the Young Sherlock TV show on Prime Video!

The series Young Sherlock introduces a youthful, inexperienced Sherlock Holmes, played by Hero Fiennes Tiffin, while he’s a student at Oxford University. When a murder occurs, Sherlock must investigate to clear his name. The show also features James Moriarty (Dónal Finn), and a recent preview suggests a significant twist to the usual relationship between these two iconic characters.

Holmes And Moriarty Are Friends At Oxford In Young Sherlock

The initial trailer for Young Sherlock showcases the show’s energetic style, which is similar to Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes films – he’s an executive producer on the series. It also introduces some of the characters who will join the young detective on his adventures, including Princess Gulun Shou’an, played by Zine Tseng.

The most memorable character is arguably James Moriarty, Sherlock Holmes’s famous nemesis. In both the original stories and popular adaptations like the series Sherlock and the film Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, Moriarty and Holmes have a final showdown at Reichenbach Falls. They both appear to fall to their deaths, but it turns out only Moriarty actually dies.

Sherlock Holmes famously pretended to die before coming back, and now a new series, Young Sherlock, is taking a look at his early life. It will show how Holmes and his arch-nemesis, Moriarty, first met – with a surprising twist: they begin as friends at Oxford University. This makes the story even more intriguing, because it begs the question of what could have possibly driven them to become enemies.

Moriarty Replacing Watson In Young Sherlock Is A Genius Twist

Because the show, Young Sherlock, centers on a teenage Holmes, John Watson won’t be appearing. However, Holmes will still have a partner – Princess Gulun Shou’an, though their relationship will be a bit rocky. Interestingly, the show suggests Holmes and Moriarty will have a more collaborative, almost partnership-like connection.

Showing Holmes and Moriarty as friends during their time at Oxford is a clever idea. It lets the film delve into the roots of their complex relationship and explains how they become such formidable enemies later on.

Moriarty is a brilliant criminal, often considered Holmes’s intellectual equal, but he uses his talents for evil. The new series, Young Sherlock, explores how Moriarty and Holmes’s extraordinary minds interact and conflict, creating a relationship that’s quite unlike the familiar partnership between Holmes and Watson.

Young Sherlock Is Already Setting Itself Apart From Other Adaptations

What really makes Young Sherlock stand out isn’t just the surprising dynamic between Holmes and Moriarty. While the show’s focus on Holmes as a teenager at Oxford is a major change, it also presents a more impulsive and daring version of the famous detective.

Unlike many Sherlock Holmes stories, “Young Sherlock” includes his parents and explores the family dynamics that shaped him. The series also shows how Sherlock’s path to becoming a detective affected his family life.

As a huge Sherlock Holmes fan, I’m really looking forward to Young Sherlock because it promises to show us how he became the brilliant detective we know and love. I’m especially excited to see his early cases, how he grew up, his family life, and the story of how his relationship with Moriarty went from friendship to rivalry. Hopefully, the movie delivers on all that potential!
