Adapting video games into TV shows and movies has gotten better lately, as seen with Amazon’s Fallout series, but it’s been a long journey with many failures along the way. The 2016 Assassin’s Creed movie is a well-known example of an adaptation that didn’t quite work. Even with big stars like Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard, the film received negative reviews and didn’t perform well financially, earning $240.6 million worldwide on a $125 million budget. However, because the Assassin’s Creed games are still popular, Netflix is giving the franchise another chance with a new series, which is a promising sign for its potential success.
Johan Renck, known for directing the award-winning series Chernobyl, will be directing the Assassin’s Creed series, according to Variety. He received high praise and several awards, including multiple Best Director wins, for his work on Chernobyl.
Netflix’s Assassin’s Creed Could Be the Next Great Video Game Adaptation

Recent video game movies, such as the Sonic the Hedgehog films and The Super Mario Bros. Movie, have done well in theaters, but the best adaptations so far have actually been TV series. This makes sense because video games often tell complex, lengthy stories. Even games with shorter narratives, like the Uncharted series, are longer than most movies. TV allows filmmakers more time and space to fully develop the characters and storylines.
The world of Assassin’s Creed is filled with fascinating stories and myths, giving Netflix a strong foundation for a new series. Plus, director Johan Renck seems like a great choice. His work on Chernobyl was praised for its high quality and powerful portrayal of a terrible event. While Assassin’s Creed will be more of an action-packed adventure than a strict historical drama, Renck’s experience shows he can create compelling stories with detail and nuance, and bring out the best in his actors.
If the director’s skill and precision translate to the Assassin’s Creed series on Netflix, the show promises to be incredibly detailed and immersive. While it can’t fully capture the experience of playing the game – that’s what makes games special – the creators can definitely strive to deliver the next best thing. Importantly, adaptations of video games have improved significantly since the previous Assassin’s Creed movie, so the team should feel empowered to really highlight what makes the games so unique and beloved.
It’s going to be interesting to see how director Renck brings the world of Assassin’s Creed to life in this new series. Netflix clearly isn’t just relying on the popularity of the game; they’re aiming for a major success, hoping this show will be on the same level as hits like The Last of Us and Fallout. To achieve that, they’ve brought together a talented team both in front of and behind the camera. After the disappointing movie adaptation, fans might finally get the Assassin’s Creed series they’ve been waiting for.
