As a follower who has witnessed the heart-wrenching ordeal of Dee-Dee Bailey, I can confidently say that this latest instalment of Coronation Street was one for the books. The revelation about Joel Deering’s horrific actions left me speechless and shocked to my core.
Tonight, I got a massive jolt, just like one of those intense scenes on Coronation Street (August 19th, 2024). You see, dear fellow cinema enthusiast, I’m talking about Dee-Dee Bailey (Channique Sterling-Brown) here. Well, she discovered the chilling reality about her fiancé, Joel Deering (Calum Lill), in a heart-stopping episode that left me utterly stunned.
In a surprising twist, it’s revealed that Joel is actually the unacknowledged father of Lauren Bolton’s child, little Frankie. He precipitated Frankie’s early arrival by administering drugs to Lauren with the intention of ending the pregnancy, unfortunately for him, the opposite happened. (Cait Fitton plays Lauren Bolton)
Frankie is still receiving treatment at the hospital, while on ITV’s soap opera, Dee-Dee searched for local jewelers in an attempt to discover where Lauren’s necklace was originally bought.
Detective Swain (Lisa Swain), previously known as Vicky Myers, uncovered evidence showing that Joel had been Lauren’s legal representative in a case involving criminal damage. This discovery established a clear connection between the suspect and his intended victim, who attempted to harm earlier this year. When Lisa phoned Joel about his failure to inform the authorities of this link, he feigned ignorance.
Dee-Dee made a breakthrough with the necklace, and asked a passing Lisa if she recalled the piece of jewellery. Lisa wasn’t sure, but found it “interesting” that Joel hadn’t been honest with Dee-Dee about his recent questioning at the station.
In conversation, Dee-Dee talked to Roy Cropper (played by David Neilson). While wrongly incarcerated for what appeared to be Lauren’s murder, he recalled and made a replica of her necklace.
Having spent years working with law enforcement, I can attest to the fact that people don’t always follow through on their promises, especially when it comes to matters involving authority figures. In this case, it seemed likely to me that Joel had failed to deliver the sketch as requested by Dee-Dee, since there were no leads in the case at the time. It’s a sad reality, but one I’ve seen all too often during my career.
Dee-Dee visited Lauren and Frankie at the hospital, inquiring about Joel and his necklace from the teenager. When Lauren spoke of her plans to relocate to Belfast once Frankie recovers, it reminded Dee-Dee of Joel’s supposed work trip that had been called off for the same destination.
In an attempt to hide my true feelings, I pretended not to notice when Dee-Dee shared the coincidence and later questioned me about the necklace. However, Dee-Dee’s persistence paid off as she trailed me to the hospital, where I was found near Frankie’s incubator with Lauren.
As Dee-Dee observed Joel’s expression, it became clear to her that he was Frankie’s father. A wave of nausea washed over her as she revisited memories of Joel deceiving her repeatedly; however, when Joel exited the room with another falsehood, Dee-Dee managed to keep her cool once more.
Once more in private with Lauren, Dee-Dee managed to extract the secret about Frankie’s biological parents from her. In a powerful and well-acted duet scene between Sterling-Brown and Fitton, Lauren revealed the persistent mistreatment by Joel.
It suddenly became clear to Dee-Dee that Joel’s actions towards Lauren went beyond just a sexual encounter; he had also manipulated and harmed her as well.
Joel overheard from outside the room as Dee-Dee and Lauren discovered that Joel had contaminated Lauren’s meal intentionally to trigger premature labor – aiming to terminate the pregnancy and eliminate evidence of his mistreatment.
Without realizing that Joel was privy to everything, Dee-Dee escorted Lauren to the police station and stood by her during her interrogation with Lisa.
However, it was Joel who arrived first, informing DC Kit Green (Jacob Roberts) about his past intimate involvement with Lauren, which he felt remorseful over.
After making the accusation public that Lauren intentionally induced her labor prematurely, it became necessary for her to face further questioning.
In the comfort of their home, Dee-Dee found herself crumbling in the embrace of her father, Ed Bailey, played by Trevor Michael Georges. On a Wednesday, Dee-Dee is set to confront Joel. However, we’re left wondering about the outcome of their talk. Could Dee-Dee be instrumental in bringing Joel to justice?
